The tout resist ance offered by many speculative atock in the course of today's lively session waa commonly accepted as proof that yester day's violent decline of the general list had been carried beyond reasonable limit. Weakness prevailed at th opening, lead ers of the varloua groups extending yes terday's losses by 1 to 6 points, but after the first half an Impressive rebound en sued which continued to the close. The rally clearly reaulted from a com bination of what Is technically called "good buying" and covering of short con tracts In the more representative Issues, notably transportatlona and seasoned in dustrials. Important factor today Included advice from leading terminal, whch pointed to a subsidence or the railway shopmen's strike, and the more hopeful views of rail road officials regarding the labor situation. Monetary condition, which figured so conspicuously In last week' market, also gave Impetus to the rally, call loan re flecting less dlscriminaton aganst all In dustrial collateral. The market was al most bare of time funds, however, 7 to 7 per cent being offered for the abort maturities. Industrials generally recognized as ot the peace division and specialties wheh owe their activity to professional inter ests manifested greater resllllency In to days dealings tnan lormer lavorues. where rallies were comparatively nominal. Sales amounted to 1,875,000 shares. Foreign exchange was again unsettled on the further weakness of French rates, France falling to $7.45. Italian and Swiss exchange also moved In favor of this market. Liberty bonds were steady, but the gen eral bond list was irregular and without especial feature. The cause was fright as to market effects of possible sudden (weep ing action at Washington toward putting wheat Into the hands of consumer at a price far below what the government ha guaranteed to .pay the farmers. During the selling stampede, corn made a sheer descent of as much a 10c a bushel from the day's top and closed excited, 4c to 7c net lower, with September $1.74 to $1.74 and December $1.42 to $1.43. Oats lost lc to 2c and provisions all the way from 15c to $3.60. Strain in the corn market went beyond tho limit of endurance when near the end of business hours the attention of traders necessarily became centered almost alto gether on the chance that the conference announced to take place between President Wilson and Federal Wheat Director Julius Barnes this evening mlKht result In a radical change of the policy which It had been generally assumed that the govern ment would follow as to the disposal of the 1919 domestic wheat crop. Until after midday the majority of dealers had clung to the opinion that recent drastic setbacks In the price of corn had sufficiently dis counted the agitation against the high cost of living. However, the contingency In regard to wheat had been looked on as remote. Then came signs that thi view was perhaps a mistake, and simultane ously the fact was disclosed that the market was almost bare of orders to buy. Liquidation and short selling then ran wild, but something of a rally cam In the end, mainly through profit taking on the part of bear speculators. Oats sympathized with the extreme weakness of corn. Packers' buying of lard and rib made those sommodities relatively firm. Pork, though, lacked any aupport and fell like lead Art. Open. High. Low. I Close. Yes'y.
