The Girl's Pay Envelope
Often Makes Matrimony
Less Attractive
. By BEATRICE FAIRFAX.
Which is better, to marry for love
or money? That jeems a strange
question to ask these days when
happiness and success is within the
grasp of every woman.
, And yet a great many girls write
me letters saying they are deeply
in love with one man, but that a
second man with much better pros
pects is deeply in love with them.
They do not care for this second
man; indeed, in a good many in
stances, he is even repulsive to them,
yet they want advice as to which
they would better marry?
There is usually a postcript to
these letters saying that the fam
ilies of the writers are highly in fa
vor of the more prosperous match.
Such a situation is entirely out of
key with the times.
Girls are no longer pawns in their
father's households, charming, su
perfluous creatures who used to sit
around and do a little embroidery
while waiting for some man to take
them "off their father's hands." That
was actually the phrase used, and no
one appeared to think it offensive or
degrading.
Until a short time ago, a genera
tion or two perhaps, whole families
would be engaged in tragi-comedy
of getting a daughter settled. Thack
eray deals with this phrase of so
ciety in his own inimitable fashion
in, "The Newcomes," where every
one but particularly the worldly old

grandmother was engaged in mar
rying off Ethel.
But, happily, modern conditions
have put an end to the painful pro
cess of auctioning off our daughters.
And with the world lull o: oppor
tunities for women, it is a pretty
weak sort of a sister who allows her
self to be married for a home
The creditable modern girl mar
ries because she is in love and be
cause a certain young man seems to
her a desirable life partner, not be
cause the family wants to get her off
its hands. And this kind of mar
riage is far more complimentary to
the man than the old-fashioned pig-in-a-poke
business, where the young
man first proposes to the girl's fath
er and mother, and if they accepted
him, then to the girl herself. And
the "blushing bride," as she used
to be called, .really married "a home
of her own" rather than a man she
loved. .
How much better is the modern
way, where the union actually repre
sents love, choice, congeniality of
tastes and a mutual desire to make
each other happy.
We will suppose a case of two
young people working in the same
office and taking a fancy to each
other. After a while they discover
that the fancy has tinged this grey
old world with a rainbow hue of ro
mance. And again it is the garden
of Eden, while the apple trees are
still in blossom.
From this blissful dream the
young people awaken to the prac
tical consideration ot money. an
they afford to marry? How much
is enough? Item by item they go
over the balance sheet of household
expenditures, they strike out the
superfluities and make a mark op
posite what they just must have. But
happily these all-important questions
are now "up to them." It is entirely
their own affair. They do not have
to call in a family council as did
young people even a couple of gen
erations ago, and the girl's father
and mother decided on the wholly
material things necessary to their
daughter's happiness.
These good people did not waste
much time over the girl's feelings,
or how she felt about her future
husband; the number of rooms in the
house to be provided was the thing,
and how much had been put by in
the bank.
But our modern young people,
consulting themselves, find that each
is making a hundred dollars a month
and that it would be unwise for the
girl to give up her salary, because
with the tremendous cost of every
thing they could not possibly get

Mail Orders Receive Our Most Careful Attention
like a good pal, to help out with her
pay 'envelope for a year or two at
least. After which time the young
man will have completed some par
ticular course of study, such as law,
medicine or engineering, when he
will have the prospects of a really
good opening.
These young people are pals,
friends, lovers they are partners for
life's biggest stakes and each holds
the other up to top-notch achieve
ment. There is a genuine incentive
toward economy, a genuine incentive
to play the game fairly and squarely
and youth and love are the great
est factors for its success. But how
different a couple of generations ago.
What was the fate of two young
people who found themselves in
love, yet had no money? You have
only to read the novels of that day
to see what happened to them.
The gentleman, if he was deeply
in love and went in for despair
and Byronic despair was still the
fashion politely drank himself to
death for the lady's sake. No other
course of dissipation being open to
him owing to a lack of fortune.
A more liberal choice of fates was
open to the young lady. Her family
turned out hot-foot to run down a
rich suitor, failing this she often
"went into a decline," a far more
elegant and highly esteemed course
of conduct than to go into the home
of some more fortunate relative as a
poor relation.
Think of it, and this melancholy
choice of fates overtook her at the
age of 25, when the curtain rang
down on all the romantic possibili
ties of a girl's life.
You see the successful women of
the day had to marry, there was
nothing else open to them, too many
girls at home cluttered up the pre
vailing social system.
There is no reason why a girl
should fancy today that she is
obliged to marry merely for mann
ing's sake. She marries because she
is in love and she can keep her job
and help to get the young man of
her choice started and both, thank
Heaven, can work out their destiny
together.
The young man does not have to
drink himself to death and the
young lady does not have to go into
a decline. Believe me, modern young
people have got a great deal to be
thankful for.
Good Salad Dressing
Important Now
Our home manager was noted 'for
her mayonnaise dressings. She it
was who always furnished the salad
dressing for the church suppers and
took the premiums at the state fair.
But alas, one day she was unable
to secure the accustomed results.
Her salad dressing separated and no
old and tried remedy availed. This
fact was brought to the attention
of a domestic science woman, who
at once began to inquire about the
materials used and the method of
making.
The oil was of the highest quality
and the eggs fresh, but it developed
that the home manager had been ac
customed to another oil and felt
that she could not have success with
a new element in her formula.
The domestic science teacher
gave her the principles of making
the dressing, namely: Use all
quality product, have oil and egg
of uniform temperature. Place the
yolk of egg in the bowl, add the
mustard, pepper, salt and a teaspoon
of lemon juice, beat immediately
with a dover beater (never raise
up the beater from the bowl until
work is done). Add a small amount
of oil and beat until the mixture
is thick, then add a few drops of
lemon juice or while vinegar to
thin add more oil and repeat un
til all oil is used. The result was
as fine mayonnaise as she ever saw.
The secret is in learning to use the
best materials and then work con
tinuously until the job is finished.
With these instructions the home
manager's confidence was restored
and sFe now makes the finest may
onnaise with no danger of failure.
Her results are always uniform and
her success assured.
