CITY MARKET TO
SELL AT COST, IS
HAYOJR PLAN
Proposes Scheme to Reduce
Household Expenses by Sell
ing Necessities in Eco
nomical Manner.
Mayor Smith yesterday broached a
plan to city commissioners to at
tempt to reduce the high cost of
living in Omaha.
The mayor proposes to establish
markets at various places through
out the city where the necessities of
life will be sold to the people at
cost.
He plans to use the old South
Side city hall and various fire
houses for this purpose.
"We will buy flour, bacon, hams,
cured meats, corn meal, canned
goods and the like in carload quan
tities and sell them at cost to all
comers," said the mayor.
"The old South Side city hall has

a lot of unused space which can be
put to excellent use for this pur
pose. Aid Labor Crisis.
"Something must be done to stop
this enormous sky-rocketing of the
price of food. The statement of W.
G. Lee, president of the Trainmen's
union in Washington Thursday was
sensible. If the cost of living is
reduced the laboring men will not
be all the time seeking higher
wages.
"If we establish a number of these
markets throughout the city they
will act as a regulator of the gro
cery stores. If the stores know that
people can go to the municipal mar
kets and buy things cheaper they
will be more careful not to boost
their prices too high.
"Everything will be handled in the
most economical manner. We will
sell only in quantities a bushel of
potatoes, a side of bacon, a whole
ham. We won't keep fresh meats
and vegetables, because we haven't
the refrigeration facilities. And we
can't cut meats because that would
require the services of skilled men."
The mayor was urged to action in
this matter partly by a letter he re
ceived a few days ago from an em
ploye of one of the large fruit com
mission houses, who stated that tne
wholesale fruit men regulate the
supply of fruit in Omaha so that
prices will be kept up. He charged
that large quantities of fruit are al
lowed to spoil in the rs in the
local yards, so that high prices may
be secured for the fruit that is
placed on the market.
Favored By Commisisoners.
! Mayor Smith was asked about the
legality of establishing the markets.
"I don't know for sure about
that," he said. "But at this time I
don't think we need to look too
closely at the strict letter of the
law. We are confronted with a
state of affairs that demands action.
Ve have the money. We can buy
the goods in large quantities and
sell them again in a few days. It
merely amounts to turning over the
city's own money in the interest of
the people."
Commissioner Ure expressed
himself as, in favor of the project.
"I am in favor of anything that
will bring down the cost of living
to the people of Omaha," he said.
"We will have to look into the legal
aspect of the case. But we ought
to get action just as quickly as pos
sible." Commissioner Butler declared
himself heartily in favor of the may
or's scheme.
Mayor Smith will prepare his
proposition in the form of a reso
lution which he will present to the
city council at the committee of the
whole meeting next Monday.

SECOND WOMAN
IS ATTACKED BY
MALE INTRUDER
Miss Peterson Knocked Un
concious by Assailant Who
Enters Room at Early
Morning Hour.
Miss Marie Peterson, 17 years old,
a stenographer in the offices of the
Drake Construction company, was
knocked unconscious by an uniden
tified assailant who climbed into
her bedroom yesterday and at
tempted to criminally assault her.
She screamed. He struck her. He
jumped through a window and es
caped. '
The attempted assault occurred at
Miss Peterson's home, 2424 South
Twentieth avenue, at 5 yesterday
morning.
Aroused by Screams.
The girl's parents were aroused
by her screams- They rushed into
her room in time to see the man's
figure leap through the window.
They could not discern his color.
The girl does not know whether
he was white or black.
The parents found the girl un
conscious. She was lying across
the bed with her head dangling.
Fifteen minutes elapsed before her
senses were restored. A police
surgeon revived her. She is con
fined to her bed as a result of the
attack.
Miss Feterso'n says she was
awakened to find a man bending
over her.
"When I screamed the first time,"
she said, "he put his hand over my
mouth."
ays "I've Got You."
"'I've got you now!' he said, and
then I tore his hand away and
screamed again. Then he struck
me. That's the last I remember
until I woke up and found the doc
tor with me."
Near Miss Peterson's temple is
a black and blue welt, slightly
abraded as if the hand that struck
her wore a ring.
the attempted assault on tne
Peterson girl is 'the second in 48
hours in Omaha and vicinity.

The Bee's Fund for
Free Milk and Ice
Ann Edwards, 4916 Chicago street,
writes as follows:
"Last year I gave you $5 for the
milk fund for babies who were not
as fortunate as I am in-having plenty
of pure milk and ice; and I almost
forgot it this year. I want to do this
every year and to compliment you
in your effort on behalf of the ba
bies.
Ann Edwards is a baby herself,
only 18 months old. Thank you,
Ann. You are practicing the Golden
Rule well.
These are FEARFUL DAYS for
the poor little babies.
A WAITING LIST has accumu
lated and help to these depends on
how much money comes in to the
fund.
This is a call from the helpless and
the deserving.
Your money will do enormous
good if you contribute it to this

Building of New Jail
Must Be Made Issue
For People to Vote On
Folice Commissioner Ringer's
plan to build a new police station
this year went to the scrap heap
in the face of an opinion from the
city legal department, read to the
city council yesterday, which states
that the law forbids appropriation
of the necessary money without a
vote of the people.
Mr. Ringer held that $100,000 of
bonds could be issued by the city
council without the people's vote.
Eight architects put in a large
amount of work and submitted bids
on four different propositions in re
gard to the jail. Many other bids
were received for plumbing, electric
lighting fixtures, etc.
These are all wasted in face of
the fact that there is no money
available and, by the time it could
be made available, prices may have
risen so much that present bids
will be worthless.
"Mr. Ringer just wants to build
the jail as a monument to himself,"
said one citizen.
"Believe me, he'll have more
monument than he wants before
he's through," said another.
Omaha Ranks Fifth as Rail
Center In Whole Country
The Bureau of Publicity figures
that of the leading cities of the
United Stales there are but four out
of which more railroad mileage is
operated than through the Omaha
gateway. They are: Chicago, with

The mileage out of Omaha is
58,633.
Omaha has nine trunk lines, op

senger to four cities on the Pacific
coast, to three cities on the gulf
and three to the north.
Thi milr-ace onerated out of
Omaha is almost twice as great as
that out of New York with its 10
trunk lines.
