FINANCIAL
New York, July 21. An undercurrent of
caution pervaded the stock market today,
prices manifesting considerable irregularity
and becoming weak In the extremely ac
tive operations of the final hour.
The Mexican situation, another sharp
break In sterling exchange, expansion of
labor troubles and further reported crop
damage were among the developments
over the double holiday which entered
into the calculations of the trading ele
ment. These adverse Influences were balanced
in a measure by price advances In sev
eral of the mure Important staples, in
cluding wire products, with firmer tend
encies for metals and related commodities.
Call loans held within 3 cents lower and
more restricted range, but time money was
in greater demand, borrowers paying as
much as 7'i per cent for virtually all
forms of accounts.
Dealings were only moderately under
recent high averages, but the score of
the trading was less broad, concentrating
more than ordinarily in motors and af
filiated specialties, oils, steels, equipments
and metals, where extreme recessions ex
tended, 3 to 15 points.
Last week's Intermittent Inquiry for
rails of the minor groups seemed to have
flattened out, but St. Paul and Texas &
Pacific displayed occasional activity, while
standard transportations were Inclined to
react.
Features of pronounced weakness In
cluded Chandler, Stutz. Maxwell and Gen
eral Motors, United States Rubber, Texas
Company, Bethlehem, Crucible and U. S.
Steel. Baldwin Locomotive, Utah Copper,
American Smelting, Woolen and American
Nickel. Sales amounted to 460,000 shares.
Bonds. Including Liberty and interna
tional issues, fell back variably on smaller
dealings. Total sales (par value) approxi
mated $13,150,000. Old United States bonds
were unchanged on call.

Wheat arrivals today were large with
233 cars, while corn arrivals of 68 cars
and oats 47 cars were moderate. Rye re
ceipts were 7 cars and braley 9 clrrs. There
was a very good demand generally for all
grains. Corn was unchanged to 3 cents
up. virtually all selling higher. Oats were
unchanged and rye and barley firm.
Wheat was generally steady though the
top for new No. 2 hard today was about
2 cents under Saturday.
Cash sales today were:
Corn No. 1 white: 1 car. $1.99. No. 2

Bullish sentiment ruled the corn mar
ket throughout the day, for not only were
hog values soaring again hut labor diffi
culties both in the packing house Indus
try and In other important lines seemed
to promise better chance of adjustment
than was the case on Saturday. With the
movement of wheat necessarily having
preference the arrivals of corn were ex
pected to be small for some time. Profit
tr.kintf sales by holders failed therefore
t bring about any radical downturns and
a fresh break in sterling exchange was
virtually ignored.
Hedging pressure weakened oats. First,
however, all deliveries climbed to the
highest prices yet this season. The bulge
was due to predHctlons that the 1919 yield
of oats would be less than the average.
Provisions were lifted by the strength
of corn and hogs. , '

Cattle Receipts this morning were the
heaviest for any one day In July in the
history of the cattle early estimated catl.'d
for 581 cars or 14,500 head as compared
a little over 9,000 last week and 10.500
head a year ago. Bulk of the offerings

Good native beeves made up a compara
tively ,small proportion of today's ruo,
while demand for this grade 'tuff was
brisk and early rounds saw a tree move
ment of the best dry lot steers at figures
that retained all of last week's advance.
Choice to prime grades sold generally at
$17.0017.50. and a load of strictly prime
weighty steers reached $18.00. a new top
of recent weeks. Plain nations and west
erns were In indifferent request and moed
very slowly at sharply lower prices, what
few early sales were made being quoted

Interest payable February ard August ist, in New York City, without deduction of any tax or Governmental charge
(except succession, inheritance and income taxes). Coupon notes in denominations of fi,ooo, registered as to principal
only and interchangeable. Redeemable at the option of the Company on sixty days' notice at 105 and interest on any
interest date.
Notes for Sinking Fund will be retired either by purchase in the open market or, if they cannot be so purchased at
105, shall be drawn. Notes acquired by the Sinking Fund will be cancelled.

For information regarding these notea, reference ia made to the letter of Mr. J. W. McQueen, President
of the Company, which ia on &le with ua, and which ia summarized aa follows:
The Notes will be direct obligations of the Sloss-Sheffield Steel and Iron Company. The properties and plant of
the Company, aggregating in value over $35,000,000, are free from mortgage or other encumbrance, with the exception
of an issue of $2, 000,000 First Mortgage Six Per Cent. Bonds, which mature February ist, 1920. From the proceeds of
of these Notes $ 2,060,000 will be deposited in escrow with the Central Union Trust Company of New York for payment
at 'maturity with interest, on February ist, 1920, of a like amount of First Mortgage Bonds. This will leave the
Company's plantfand properties entirely free and clear of any mortgage or other encumbrance.
The balance of the proceeds will be used for completing the erection of the Company's by-product coke ovens, for
building a central power station; for electrifying the coal and ore mines, for the acquisition of additional ore properties,
and for other general improvements.
The Trust Agreement under which the Notes will be issued will provide, among other things, that so long as any
of the Notes are outstanding the Company will not mortgage any of its real or personal property (except the Company
may give purchase money mortgages and in the regular course of its business may pledge its current assets, etc.,) and that
the Company will pay the sum of $300,000 annually into a Sinking Fund to be applied to the purchase and retirement of
notes at not exceeding 105 and interest, thus cancelling approximately 50 of the total issue before maturity..
v ASSETS AND EARNINGS
The total net tangible assets of this Company on December 31, 1918, amounted to $22,927,542.63, of which
$4,024,813.49 was represented by net quick assets. Notwithstanding the curtailment of the activities of the Company
due to war restrictions, the profits for 1918, after making provision for estimated Federal Income Tax of $1,000,000, were)
$1,972,071.88, or about five and one-half times the amount required for the payment of interest on the proposed issue.
We offer these notes for subscription, subject to allotment, when, as and if issued and received,
and subject to the approval of counsel, at 9734 and interest, to yield about 6.309b.
