Cattle A rather moderate Thursday's
run of cattle showed up about 4,200 head
divided about half and half natives and
rangers. Demand for the corn-fed cattle
was acttve and 1016c higher with beat
beeves bringing $17.35017.40. Quality of
the western cattle was not very good
and while the best commanded strong

ruled slow to 25a lower both as beef
and as feeders. Cows and heifers were
rather slow and steady to a quarter low
er. Best fleshy feeders sold at full figures
while tne general run or stock cattle

Sheep and Lambs Receipts of sheep
and lambs amounted to about 60 loads
estimated at 13,000 head with a larger
proportion of the run consisting of fat
grades. Most of the offerings came from
Idaho as on meat days this week. De
mand was rather dull and dreggy on the
early session but packers evidently
wanted their usual quota of killing grades
and the market on the whole ruled gen
erally steady. Some good fat ewes
reached $9.00 and killing lambs sold large
ly from $17.00 on up to $17.25 and bet
ter Inquiry for feeder offerings was
not as broad as yesterday and very lit
tle business was transacted In this branch
of the trade until well along towards
mid-day. Prices were quoted to steady
to perhaps a little lower with bulk of
the good feeder lambs moving around
$14.1514.40. Yesterday's close for feed
er grades were considerable lower than
the opening most of the late sales re

Chicago, July 16. Foreign exchange de
moralisation together with labor troubles,
severe breaks In the hog market and fail
ure of bullish weather predictions brought
about material setbacks today In the value
of corn. The close was heavy "4c to
3 He net lower, with September $1.94 to
$1.94 and December $1.62 to 31.63H
Oats lost lc to 2 4o and provisions 2c
to 65c.
From the outset bearish sentiment pre
vailed, and the close was at virtually
the lowest level of the day. Much of
the selling during the last hour In par
ticular, was inspired by knowledge that
aside from Industrial clashes elsewhere
a serious Increase of dlsemployment In
Chicago was imminent. Besides the prices
of hogs had shrunk about 60c a hundred
weight over night and there was nothing
to confirm talk current yesterday that
sudden big damage to the growing crop
might develop.

FINANCIAL
New York, July 17. Stocks were firm to
strong at the opening of today's active
fr.Hinr makina further variable gains
during the relatively dull mid-session, but
broke witn consiaeraoie vioicnt-e w..iu
the close, when numerous substantial
gains were replaced by net losses.
IThe reversal lacked definite explanation
In authoritative quarters, but rumors were
current during the day that the financial
powers, aided by the federal reserve
board, Intend to Issue another warning
against excessive speculation. t
Much of the day's news was decidedly
favorable to the long account, embracing
further advices of expansion In the steel
Industry, higher prices for copper and
allied metal and comparatively easy
rate for call money. There was also a
pronounced readjustment of the foreign
exchange situation, but not until rates on
London had fallen to new mlnlmums, with
further weakness In remittances to Paris
and additional depreciation of neutral ex
change. Speculative Interest continued to revolve
around the oils, motors and the various
commodity aharea which have made up
the bulk of recent operations. To these
were added several of the minor or .re
organized railways, Missouri, Kansas
Texas common and preferred, tor Instance,
taking the place of other western and
southwestern issues.
Equipments also contributed appreciably
to the broader dealings, their early activity
and- strength being concurred In with re
ports that targe domestic and foreign
contracts are soon to be awarded. Cop
pers made little headway, although heavy
exports of that staple are said to be in
process of negotiation. Sales amounted to
1,700,000 shares.
Most of today's call loans were made, at
8 per cent, although .this was. shaded at
times for the better class of collateral,
but time funds held at 8 per cent for all
dates.
Liberty bonds were firm and foreign
Issues steadied, but rails and lnduatrlals
were slightly Irregular. Total sales, par
value, aggregated $11,350,000. Old United
States bonds were unaltered on call.
