6 Months' Old Infant
A mother with her 6-months-old
infant called on Superintendent T.
H. Weirich of the Board of Public
Welfare and complained that when
the baby cried in the middle of the
night, her first aid was to admin
ister such nourishment as woyjd ap
peal to an infant of that age. Her
husband insisted that the baby, was
merely thirsty, and in the manner
of a lord and master, he prescribed a
drink of cold water for their first
born. This contrariety of opinion
led to a family row in the middle of
the night.
The welfare superintendent sum
moned husband and wife to appear
before mm, together with the baby.
He told the husband that it was
commendable for him to display
such an interest-in his child, but ad
vised him that there are limits be
yond which even a father should not
go in the matter of caring for his
own offspring.

Ex-Soldiers Asked to Make,
Wishes Known On Land Bills
Ex-soldiers of the army, navy and
marine corps are requested to in
quiry concerning which of ihe three
homestead bills now pending in con
gress they are in favor of, according
to a plan formulated by the execu
tive committee of the Omaha chap
ter of the American Legion.
Information concerning the bills
can be secured at the office of either
Allan Tukey, president of- the
Omaha chapter, 620 First National
Bank building, or T. J. McGuire, 508
Omaha National Bank building.
Such answers as are made should
be directed, the committee advises,
to congressmen or senators.
The three bill jointly call for ah
appropriation of from $100,000,000
to $500,000,000 for the reclamation
of 475,000,000 acres of arid, swamp
and cutever government land in
the United States. Each provides
for a fund to loan money to returned
service men at interest rates of
to 5 per cent for 40 to 60 years.

Railroad Workers Quit
To Help In Harvest Fields
Hundreds of men sent out into Ne
braska to do track work for the
railroads are quitting the jobs and
going into the harvest fields, where
they are earning 50 to 65 cents an
hour and board, working a 10-hour
day. In sending men to track and
section work, the railroad compan
ies supply them with transporta
tion, paying them 40 cents an hour.
Mrs. Charles Hanke Dies"
Mrs. Leah C. Hanke, 49 years old,
wife of Charles Hanke, 2470 North '
Forty-fifth avenue, died (Thurtday
at her home of pneumonia.' M-rt.

ha for 20 years. She was bopa in
Monmouth, 111., and before her mar
riage was Miss Nott. Besides her

The will of the late Mrs. "Happy"
I Theodora Van Wyck Benner was
filed for probate yesterday in Doug
las county court.
It was offered first for probate in
V the Otoe couhty court at Nebraska
1 City. Judge A. A. Bischof of that
court decided that Mrs. Benner was
a resident of Omaha at the time of
her, death and refused to allow the
wtir to be probated in the Otoe
county court.
The will it dated October 22, 1909.
and 'was witnessed by Victor Rose
water, Myron Learned and Grace
Rowland.
Son Principal Heir.
It leaves all her estate except
$2,000 to her son, Van Wyck Ben-
ner, .15 years old, and, since his
. mother's death, in the custody of
his father, Alonzo Benner of New
York city, from whom Mrs. Ben
- ner was divorced several years ago.
The estate is valued at more than
$600,000, attorneys stated. It con
sists principally of 2,500 acres of
rich Nebraska land in Otoe and
Nemaha counties, valued at from
$200 to $300 an acre. There is also
considerable personal property.
The will gies $1,000 each to Theo
dosia Mott and Van Wyck Mott of
. Washington, D. C, cousins of Mrs.
Benner, and places all the rest tf
the estate in trust in the hands of
John W. Steinhart of Nebraska City,
as executor, with instructions to pay
all; necessary expenses or van
.Wyck Benner until he is 18 yeais
old. From then until Van Wyck
is30 years old he is to receive the
entire net income ot the estate, ana
when he attains the age of 30 years
the entire estate is to be turned over
to him.
Provides for Children,
'if Van Wyck should die before
reaching the age of 30 years, leav
ing a child or children, the income.

reaches the age of 30 years, when it

ed among the children.

estate in Otoe county was made by
Mss. Mildred Wright Thompson of
Omaha, who said she had a claim
of $50,000 against it. This was said
to be an action for alienation of
Mr. Thompson's effections by Mrs.

Omaha Man Leaves for Russia

J. P. Cleland left for San Fran
, oisco yesterday from where he will
sail for Yokahama enroute to ,Vladi-,
. vostolc, Russia. Mr. Cleland, who
'. has been employed at the postoffice
here for the last nine years, has
betn appointed by the government
ot take charge of the army postof
fice at Vladicostok. He has been in
Washington since receiving the
news of his appointment. The work
will probably keep him in Russia for
: six or nine mjnths.
Miss Effie Cleland, a daughter,
who has been enjaged in Red Cross
canteen work in Germfeny, has been
released from duty - nd i now
tiaveling in Switzerland. She will
probably sail for New York at about
the same time that her father begins
the voyage on the Pacific.

For Mrs. Wilhelmina Storz1

buried yesterday afternoon in Forest
Lawn cemetery. Rev. O. D. Baltzly,
pastor of Kountze Memorial

mnller, Carl Kenny, A. Shagun and

Harvest Fields Attract
''Many Eastern Young Men
The Nebraska harvest fields 'are
' attracting men from many distant
states, according to C. H. Davis, act
ing director of the federal employ
ment bureau in , Omaha, who said
that the lrest recruits were from
Fitchburg, Mass.
Mr. Davis stated that scores of.
men coming to work during the har
vest were not tramps, but students
leeking work daring, their vacation
vand other young men who appeared
to be equally as sincere in seeking,
