Chicago (iraln and Provisions. Chicago, July $. Fresh strength became manifest In the corn market today, chief ly owing to scarcity of supplies and to continued record breaking advances In the value of hogs. The corn market closed nervous- o to 4c net higher with September $1.92 to $1.92 and December $1,61 te $1.61. Oats fin ished c to c to lc higher, and pro visions varying from unchanged figures to 17 cents gain. Nearby deliveries of corn closed at the top prices of the day with September at the highest level yet this season. Through out the session. July and September were especially sensitive to bullish Influence notwithstanding heavy and persistent profit taking by longs. - Broadening of European demand In Argentina, however, as well as shrinkage of arrivals here and at other domestio centers kept commis sion house buying -aggressive, and so too. did the extraordinary unchecked rise of the hog market. On the other hand, excellent conditions for the growing crop In the United States prevented any radi cal ascent In the December price. Oats reflected the upward slant of corn values. Provisions were easier at first owing to lack of buying orders, but later rallied as a result of the strength of grain and hogs. Art. Open. High. Low. Close. Yest. Trading on the Stock exchange today again was very lively and more confusing as to trend, tne stlffer rates for money, once more being the dominant factor in the, several re versals and recoveries. Call loans opened at I to 10 per cent, as against yesterday's final rate of 20 per cent, and held at the Initial quota tions until the flna hour, when as high as 15 per (cent was paid on mixed loans and 17 per cent for all Industrials. Overnight developments In their rela tion to quoted values, were helpful mainly to the Industrial list, but also to 'coppers and metals. The one disquieting feature was the further weakness of exchange on the entente centers,, with sterling and francs at low records. Reports from trade centers accentuated the lnoreaaed activity at steel and Iron mills. A price of 20 cents for copper for August delivery was quoted, and trac tions and gas shares were visibly strength ened by the order authorizing a local t-cent transfer rate. Oils, particularly Pan-American and Mexican Petroleums, Royal Dutch and Sinclair, were the features of early strength, followed by such motors as Chandler, Stutz and White, the latter making an extreme gain of almost nine points on its sharp advance of the final hour. Steels were sustained by the strength of Crucible and Mldvale, together with intimations that the June tonnage state ment of the United- States Steel corpora, tlon, to be Issued on Thursday, would show unmistakable signs of trade Im provement. Various peace specialties recently In favor were less In evidence, but rails de noted substantial absorption, minor Issues, such as Missouri Pacific and St. Louis and San Francisco displaying marked strength. Sales amounted to 1,675,000 shares. Bonds were more active, but little changed In the domestic and foreign di visions. Total sales, par value, aggre gated $11, $75,000. Old United States bonds were unchanged on call. Higher rates ruled for call loans in the final hour, but oils and motors were at the day's best quotations. The closing was Irregular. Trading In the stock market today was again restrained by tight money, but va rious speculative Issues made material gains. Sales approximated 1,600,000 shares. Ststionary firemen and engineers of Omaha will receive an increase of $5 a . week as a result of the award given yesterday by Federal s Mediator Fred Feick of Indian apolis. The men had demanded ac increase of $1 and a six-day week. Mediator Feick said after the meeting yesterday he held with thi men and officials of the Omahi Beverage company that the official: , presented evidence which preclude his granting a six-day week. Beside.' the increase of weekly pay, the mer are to receive 75 cents an hour foi all time over eight hours a day. Engineers were allowed to count all Sunday work as overtime. Oil ers and helpers are to receive the same advance as the firemen. Firemen immediately accepted the terms of the award, but the meeting closed without the engineers mak ing any final disposition of the offer. Mr. Feick stated that before he came both sides had agreed to abide by his decision, and so he was con fident that the engineers would ac cept his award in the matter. The meeting on the third floor of the Karbach block was between the officials and men of the Omaha Bev erage company, gut it is understood that about 12 ice companies' in the city agreed previously to abide by the decision of the federal mediator. This would practically fix the wage scale for firemen and engineers of Omaha. There were between 40 and SO men at the beverage plant affected by the award, and if the scale is accepted by the other companies of Omaha, it means that hereafter fire-, men will receive $31.20 a week plus overtime , for all work over eight hours a day, while the engineers will get a flat wage of $34, besides overtime for Sundays and for all time over eight hours on other days.
