Investigate The Paving Bond Issue:
Then Vote For It! '
Paved roads for Douglas county.
Vote for them Tuesday; June 24.
Don't forget and don't fail.
This is to be the entering wedge for paved roads in
Douglas county.
The amount to be voted will not pave every road in the
county. But between 100 miles to 115 miles will be paved
with the funds provided at this election.
And this is but a starter.
Paved road3 enthusiasts are claining that within 10
years every road of importance in this county will be paved.
These enthusiasts say that when the people see the
benefits which will accrue from the first 100 miles of pav
ing that the movement will spuead to every other well
traveled road in the county.
Kansas City is preparing to spend $25,000,000 on the
roads within 50 miles of that city. Every road radiating
out from Kansas City i3 to be paved. " Cross-roads and con
necting roads are to be paved.
If Kansas City can get returns on $25,000,000 spent on
roads leading into that center, Omaha can surely get re
turns on $3,000,000 spent on the roads of this county.
But the sum of $3,000,000 which is to be voted next
week is not allthat will be spent at this time; it is just the
portion Douglas county will provide. ,
From automobile licenses nearly $1,000,000 will be re
alized in the next five years. And every cent will be spent
on roads in Douglas county.
Another $1,000,000 and more will be advanced by the
federal government to cover a part of the money put up by
DOUGLAS county.
If DOUGLAS county votes the $3,000,000 bond issue
next week, more than $5,000,000 will be spent for paved
roads in this county in the next five years.
You cannot spend $5000,000 in a county of this size
without every man, woman and child benefiting thereby.
Think of the tremendous amount which will be paid
out for labor in the grading and paving of 115 miles of road.
J. M. Gillan, manager of the industrial bureau of the
Omaha Chamber of Commerce, estimates Douglas county
will save $750,000 annually by having 100 miles of paved
roads.
"There are more than 16,000 automobil.es and trucks
in Douglas county," says Mr. Gillanr "Let us assume that
3,000 of these machines, when this 100 mrles of road has

been paved, will each travel
equal one automobile going 150,000 miles.
Mr. Gillan cuts the estimated expense exactly in half
and still has left $547,000 as the saving in power and tires
for one year on 100 miles of dirt roads.
His estimate includes a saving of $10 per year per auto
mobile in general up-keep when paved roads are used, mak
ing a saving of $160,000 per annum from this source.
An additional 10,000 tourists per year, once they know
that DOUGLAS county is paved so well, are each expected
to spend at least $5 per day in OMAHA, totally $50,000
extra from this source.
Today is the day of the motor truck. So say the auto
mobile manufacturer, the business man, the economist and
the farmer. ' '
But the automobile truck without a goochpaved road
is not worth much.
The motor truck, and the paved road, are to do for
farmers what the rural free delivery did for the jnail
it will make it possible for the farmer and the merchant
readily to exchange their respective commodities.
The motor truck is to do, in the coming half century,
what the railroad did in the last half century. ' The steam
train took 1,000 hamlets and isolated communities, loosely
knit together under one government and made them one
in fact as well as in name.
The motor truck is to take 1,000,000 farms and bring
them into closer touch with the city.
It is to take 1,000,000 merchants and bring them cus
tomers which they never knew before.
It is' to cut down the high cost of food by cutting the
cost of the greatest single item of that cost transportation.
There are 125,000 head of hogs, cattle and sheep hauled
into SOUTH OMAHA annually by auto truck from the
NEBRASKA side of the river.
Trucks bring 20,000,000 pounds of hogs to SOUTH
OMAHA every year.
The saving to farmers by the'use of trucks is estimated
at 10 cents per ton-mile where paved roads can be used.
This item alone is a tremendous saving.
There are dozens of reasons why those paving bonds
should be voted and not a single reason, other than a selfish,
individual reason, why they should not carry. , - .
Remember the date, June 24. ,
Vote at the regular voting places.
Women can vote if they have registered.
