THE-OMAHA BEE. HIPPOPOTAMUS PUT UP BIG FIGHT WHEN CAPTURED Hagenbeck-Wallace Circus, I Soon to Come to Omaha, Boasts of Huge River , Horse. Il When Hagenbeck-Wallace circus comes to town on Monday. June 30. at Twenty-first and Paul streets, there will be on exhibition in the mena?erie the largest hippopotamus ever brought to America. It reached the circus a few weeks ago and has been given a place of honor among the many other unusual specimens of far eastern animal Itfe. The huge river horse was cought in British South Africa by means of a pitfall a deep trench, the mouth of which is covered by a network of moss and sticks to resemble the grassy earjh. When the animal took his fatal plunge, he fought so ferociously that it required 50 natives to drag him from the dark hole and make a pris oner of him. The children who visit the circus will be delighted when they see the cutest little jungle babies that ever rolled out of the thicket. To be pre cise, however, they never saw a jungle, being captive-born lions and used to city ways. They are little ball of soft fur with bright, blink ing eyes and playful paws. Their mother, and a proud beast she is, watches her offspring zealously. Woe be to the venturesome keeper who seeks to pet these babies through the bars of the cage. Mam ma is a jealous beast and will brook no interference in her domestic af fairs. One of the institutions on the Hagenbeck-Wallace circus grounds that attracts much attention is the traveling post office. Probably no other office in America is visited ' daily by such cosmopoliton gather ings. Harvey Johnson is the post master of Wallacevtlle. He is well fitted for the job, as he speaks French, Spanish, Hindoostani and Polish and knows enough Chinese. Japanese, Portugese and modern Greek to make himself understood in those tongues. Bolsheviki Grants of Land Are Soon to Be Annulled by Russians London, June 20 American finan ciers and other persons contemplat ing taking a chance on making a fortune from a concession granted by the Russian bolsheviki are here by cautioned to "desist" and save their money. For as soon as the bolsheviki are ousted such conces sions will be declared invalid. Here is the text of an official warning issued by Prince Lvoff Saz onoff, N. Tchaiskovsky and R. Maklakoff, former officials of a con stitutional Russia, now in Paris: "A series of reports have re cently appeared in the European and American press regarding im portant concessions which the bol shevists have contemplated grants ing to foreigners in Russia. , "The representatives of Russia deem it their duty to declare, in order to allay all misunderstand ings, that no agreement with the bolshevik authorities regarding con cessions or privileges will be recog nized by the national aujjioritios, and that all transactions concluded by foreigners with representatives of the Soviets will be considered null nd void." British Explorers Plan Six Years' Expedition to Pole London (by mail). - six years polar expedition by British explor ers and scientists to the south pob, in which an aeroplane will be util ized in accomplishing the final stages of the' trip, is to be started in June, 1920. Lord Leyer hulme, soap king, is now the"sec ond largest landholder in the Brit ish Isles, having just added to his estates by buying the most of the i Island of Harris, comprising sou.WU acres. Leverhulme's action typifies a trait in the British character which, when granted affluence, im mediately secludes itself behind a "castle" wall. With his own island Leverhulme will go the old char acteristic one better. The only larger estate in the kingdom is that of the Duke of Sutherland, who owns some 900,000 acres, having recently disposed of part of his estes. y ' "C'est La Guerre."
