Sharn setbacks In the value of corn today resulted largely from excellent weather conditions for the growing crop. The close waa unsettled, c to 20 net lower, with July, $1.76 to $1.764 and September, $1.684 to $1.69. Oats, l4c to 2c down, and provisions off 80 to 8Sc. In addition to the bearish Influence of better crop prospects, a decided break In hog quotationa tended to force the corn market lower, owing to the shrinkage of feeding profit thua rendered certain. The fact that In some cases the price ot corn waa up about 13c a bushel com pared with a week ago Saturday counted likewise in favor of a reaction. Heavy profit-taking aales by houses with east ern connections took place and much more than offset persistent buying tnat was as- scribed to rural sources. Most of the or ders to purchase were for small lots. Such rallies aa took place naa no unusual en ergy. Oats weakened with corn. Country deal ers were moderate buyers on the break. Provisions were depressed In conse quence of the bearish action of cereals and nogs. Besides, an Increase was shown In the seml-montniy statement 01 ware house stocks here, and It was said that shipping demand both domestic and ex port waa rather slow. Art. I Open. High. Low. Stocks vigorously recovered today from their acute depres sion of the previous session, in numerous Instances mounting well over last week's final prices. The rally resulted mainly from an unexpected relaxation ot the call money rate. Call loans opened at per cent, but soon fell to 6 per cent on offerings of large sums from local and interior in stitutions. The demand was nominal, however, in compariaon with yesterday's urgent requirements. Sentiment among traders was more hopeful on progress of peace conference events and shares of companies having Mexican Interests reflected the better out look there. Dealings centered extensively In stocks which suffered greatest Impairment In last week's reaction, especially oils, mo tors and their rubber subsidiaries, and American Woolen and miscellaneous Is sues, Including Industrial Alcohol, Inter national Paper and American Ice. Shippings also rallied briskly with cop pers, tobaccos and leathers, and United States Steel made up all but the smallest fraction of yesterday' 8 -point decline, while American Car, Bethlehem Steel, Harvester and Baldwin Locomotive de veloped strength. Ralls failed to keep pace with the list until the last hour, the moat active peri od of the day, when transcontinental, several granger, the more popular coaler and so-called oil rails advanced one to three points. Sales were 400,000 share. Remittances to London and Paris weak ened slightly and further exports of gold were reported, including a large consign ment to South America. Bonds were firm In the main, In sym pathy with some irregularity in Liberty Issues and foreign war flotations. Total sales, par value, aggregated $11,200,000.
