Demand for com broadened out to an unusual extent today, owing largely to unfavorable crop condi tions and reports of falling off in rural consignments. The market closed strong, 8Hc to 4Vo net higher, with July 171 to 171. and September 164 to 166. Oats sained ltto to 2c, and provisions 37c to $1.26. Highest prlcea yet this season were reached In corn by the July delivery, which with other months closed at vir tually the top level of the day. Exces sive moisture and predictions of mora to follow had led to many bullish estimates on domestio crop losses. At the same time, serious results from drought In Franc and Great Britain attracted a good deal of notice. Steep fresh upturns in the value of hogs tended further to stim ulate buying of corn, a disposition which toward the last waa greatly increased on account of advicea that shipments from first hands next week would undergo a big cut. About the only Important sell ing was to realise profits. Oats trade was much enlsrged and ssn ttment bullish. Adverse crop conditions sppeared to be chiefly responsible. Lard soared to a new top record price and carried other provision skyward. Moat of the Impetus came from the strength of grain and hois. New York. Juno 11. The money situa tion today sgsln csused s slump In prices in the flnsl hour of trading on tha Stock exchange. A rlss to $ per cent for cell loana unsettled prices st a time when they were pursuing a vigorous upward course and the early galna made during' a moderately active sssslon were largely reduced or entirely lost ' The situation reflected once more what Is declared to be the attitude of conserva tive bankers towsrd the speculation wntcn has so long been in evidence. The ad vance In the Interest rate from the nor mal 6 ner cent was the third of Its kind in three consecultivo days and was inter preted In some quarters as a rebuke to professions! interests, who sre seemingly inclined to ignore the federal reservs bank's note ot warning sgstnst specula tion during a Period when money lo re quired tor other purposes, notably tha re sumption or goia exports ana in iinsno tng of the movement of the grain crop. .During the greater part of the aeaaton prices were msrked up steadily, with spec ulation becoming very broad, numerous shares which commonly do not figure to a notable extent In the dealings sdvanclng 4 to ( points. Ths msrkst unquestionably showed the effect of oonfldent pool opera tions In numerous cases, but there was slso s considerable Incresss In public buy ing, which was svtdenced by the scttvlty of the commission snd big wire houses. The enthusiasm which waa manitestea for the long side of the account was at tributed almoat entirely to the fact that speculative Interests apparently had re covered from their recent acare over money conditions and were disposed to take Into account the numeroua favorable factors In the general situation making toward Improvement These Included brilliant crop reports and revived Inquir ies on a large scsle for copper snd steel products Ralls moved In a hesitant fashion dur ing most of the day, while United States Steel slso showed a wavering tendency at times, but otherwise the trend was ag gressively upward, with a long list of shsres scoring advances anywhere from 1 to 7 points until the final dip. Sales amounted to 1,400,000 shares. Bonds inclined upward, with Victory 2H a establishing a new high record at 100.38. Total sales, par value, aggregated $11,400,000. Old United States bonds were un changed on call. Aa active selling movement on a rise in money rates in the final hour re duced a large portion of the earlier galna and put a number of stocks below yes terday's closing. The oil group Was de cidedly weak. The closing was heavy. Subsidence of apprehenalon over money conditions created fresh buying power which awept prices upward on tha atock exchange for a time today In a com manding fashion. Pools also resumed operations. Sales approximated 1,300,000 shares. Short Term Notes Quotations furnished, by 1 Peters Trust company: Principal Issue, Rate. Payable Bid. Asked. First Liberty.... 2 Second Liberty .. 4s .... Security Wealth- Financial Position- Revenue end Expenditures Credit- Interest Requirements Purpose of Loan These bonds will be a direct obligation of the Swedish government, whose faith and credit are pledged for the prompt payment of principal and interest. The wealth of Sweden, embracing private and public property, was officially estimated in 1917 at $4,690,000,000. Based on pre-war prices. Total national debt, funded and unfunded, was $441,020,800 December 31, 1918. All of the funded debt has been issued ior revenue-producing properties, such as state owned railroads, telegraphs, telephones, hydro-electric plants, canals, loans to aid agriculture, and loans to privately-owned railroads. Per capita debt at end of 1918 was $76.59, compared with $210 for the United States. Sweden has prospered during the war. Total resources of the private commer cial banks increased 148 per cent in the six years ending March 31, 1919. Bank clearings in 1918 were 5.3 times those of 1914. Foreign trade increased from $338,233,268 in $1910 to $591,234,800 in 1918, or 75 per cent. The total visible trade balance from 1914 to 1918 inclusive, was $462,301,778. The revenues and expenditures of the government showed a surplus of $12, 009,884 in 1913; $7,639,876 in 1914; $628,460 in 1915 and $24,565,684 in 1916. Actual expenditures for 1917 and 1918 have, not been recorded, but the revenues exceeded budget estimates by $50,039,000 in 1917, and by $20,257, 000 in 1918. Revenues are derived from taxation and state properties. State properties earned an average surplus of between $15,000,000 and $20,000,000 annually up to 1918, but showed a deficit of $1,570,000 for 1918, owing to in creased operating costs of the railroads. Sweden enjoys very high credit. In norma times, its external loans bore a low rate of interest, from 3 per cent to 4V per cent and sold on. the London and Paris Stock exchanges to yield from 3.23 per cent to 4.28 per cent. The aver age yield of four representative Swedish government bonds on the London ex change on May 19, 1919, was 5.31 per cent. The national budget for the fiscal year ending December 31, 1919, provides $18,481,823 for serviee of the national debt, of which $16,997,587 will be re quired for interest and $1,484,236 for amortization. The total debt service will require but 11.1 per cent of the total revenues. . , The entire proceeds of these bonds are to be used for the purchase of commodities in the United States.
