The trade showed more life and a better tone all around. Both dressed beef men and packers took hold of the desirable light and handy weight steers freely at stronger prices but they were indifferent on the heavy cattl and salesmen found It difficult to get better than steady prices at the rec ent big decline. Outlet for cows and heif ers showed more breadth and in some cases prices were a little stronger al though the undertone was far from strong. In stockers and feeders both supply and demand were light and prices showed no particular change one way or the other. BEEP STEERS. No. Av. Pr. 11 890 $10 60 28 875 12 25 877 No. Av. Rnhancement of val ues in the corn market made further progress today, owing largely to unabat-d competition between industries and ship pers. The close was nervous, 1 c to 2c net higher, with July $1.71 to $1.71. tn-i September. $1.61 to $1.62. Oats gained c to Sc. Provisions finished unchanged to 4,r,c down. Notwithstanding that arrivals of corn here were again liberal, the demand was so active that the offerings did not prove at all burdensome. Moreover, an increase of 61.000 bushels lii the visible aupplv total failed to have any bearish conse quence, and the fact was pointed out thit the total was about 10,000,000 bushels less than was the case a year ago. Unfavor able weather conditions tended likewise to give strength to the market. Besides, there were bullish reports current that planted acreage was smaller than at th corresponding time in 181 S. and that the present status of the crop was below nor mal. Numerous automatic stop-loss orders to buy were uncovered during the day's advance. Frost predictions and export demand put some independent firmness into onts. Provisions were weakened by a hr.-ak In the hog market. Lard, nevertheless, held relatively steHdy. owing to .a de crease of warehouse stocks and to buyinj said to be for export. Th speculative raoric which professional interests have for weeks been weaving on the Stock ex change was virtually torn to shreds today In a session which bordered on seml demorallzatloo at the close and daring which more than 2,000,000 share changed hands. Illustrative of the violent fluctua tion was the movement In American woolen, which after rising It points to 130, crumbled under four, selling to 110. Opening irregular the market oon re lapsed to the extent of five to six point In corn Issue as the result of active realizing, professional aelltng and appre hension as to the money outlook. The downward movement was subsequently checked through the aggressive operations of strong pools. On the rebound there were recoveries ranging up to 10 points in various specialties. Standard rail were under further constant pressure through out the session. Later the money situation became the dominant factor, call loans rising 8 to 11 per cent, whtch brought a deluge of stork on the market both for the long and short account, under which prices gave way in precipitate fashion. Fore most in the slump were Mexican petrol eum, Studebaker, American International and United Slates Alcohol, Atlantic Gulf and West Indies, and tleneral Motors. U. S. steel broke from 109 to 106. Sales amounted to 2.200,000 shares. Bonds also showed reactionary tendency, with the Liberty Issues yielding as well. Total sales (par value) aggregated $14, 000,000. Old V. The opening was 6 joints higher to 12 points lower, but May was the only month that sold below last nlfrht's clnslne; bid and th" market worked up toward midday on a little support from bullish sources or covering. September sold at 19c and March at 18.30c. or about 7 to 10 points net higher. This attracted scattered realizing and the market weak ened In the late trading under selling which seemed to come partly from Wall ftnet and which may have reflected the high-er rates for call money.
