FOUR CHILDREN
DROWNED IN LAKE
County Attorney Shotwell
Expresses Opinion Evidence
Does Not Warrant Official
Probe of Tragedy.
It it unlikely that there will be
an inquest into the death of the four
St. Agnei parish pupils drowned in
Riverview park Thursday afternoon
when attending a picnic held by pu
pils of St. Agnes convent fhusic
class.
"I hare been unable to place any
criminal responsibility for the trag
edy," A. V. Shotwell, county attor
ney, said yesterday morning. "There
may have been some negligence, and
there doubtless was, but there has
not yet been presented to me facts
that would warrant an official probe
into circumstances leading up to the
tragedy. However, Paul Steinwen
der is looking into the matter now,
and until I get his last report I shall
not definitely decided what to do."
The four who lost their lives were
Josephine Fritz, 13, 2512 Q street;
Theresa Duffy, 14, 4622 SouthTwen-
v-liir4 afreet Anna Grahnirh
Krissman, 14, 5428 South Twenty
third street, and Edward Schneider,
10, 2717 South Twenty-third street.
There were 12 rescued. The acci
dent occurred in 10 feet of water,
the center and deepest part of the
small lake at Riverview park.
Gloom Over St. Agnes.
A pall of gloom descended on St.
Agnes parish Thursday night when
word of the quadruple tragedy came
to South Side. Mothers of children
at the picnic in Riverview were fran-
tic until assured their offspring were
safe. Yesterday morning this gloom
was not dispelled. It dampened the
ardor for the holiday and many who
had planned coming into Omaha to
witnest the parades remained at
home.
' Mrs. Duffy, mother of Josephine,
one of those drowned, became hys
terical at Riverview park, where she
had hurried immediately after re
ceiving word her daughter had lost
her life. Little Joe Schneider en
deavored to jump into the lake when
his brother's body was brought
ashore. Strong hands held him back
and he was finally put into an auto
mobile and taken home by friends of
the family.
It is likely that burial of the four
will be made Monday when a public
luneral will be held.
Socialists Suspend
25,000 Extremists;
Gill Chicago Meet
Chicago, May 30. Ten members
of the national executive committee
of the socialist party are in session
here, and today it was announced
that 25,000 of the extremist wing of
the party had been suspended by
vote of the committee. Further an
nouncements were that the commit
tee had decided to call the national
convention for Chicago on August
30 and to start nation-wide meet
ings on July 4 to demand Eugene
V. Debs' release from prison and to
issue statements giving socialist
views on the peace conference and
other subjects.
According to Adolph Germer, the
party's secretary, who asked ejec
tion of the expelled members, the
ousted units are members of lie
Russian, Lithuanian. Ukrainian,
Lettish, Polish, South Slav and Hun
garian branches, who "made no
pretense of obeying the party plat
form." .
May Start Aerial Line
Between U. S. and fcanada
St. Johns, N. F., May 30. New
foundland soon may be connected
with the United States and Canada
by aerial mail and passenger lines,
it developed today, when the lower
house of the colonial legislature rati
fied a concession granted the Impe
rial Aircraft Manufacturing company
of London.
According to a representative of
the company, service will be first in
troduced between St. Johns and
Montreal.
Wilson Confers On Final
Text With Premier Orlando
Farit, May 30. Vittorio Orlando,
the Italian premier, called upon
President Wilson this morning for
a conference over the details of the
Adriatic settlement. It is under
stood that this settlement is rapidly
approaching final shape.
Eighty-Eighth Division
Expected at Dodge June 4
Des Moines, la., May 30. (Special
Telegram). Units of the Eighty
eighth division will probably begin
arriving at Camp Dodge June 4, it
is thought by the members of the
mayor's welcome home committee.
Commanders of the various units
will notify the committee of the time
of arrival in Des Moines as soon as
they get the orders.
