THIS OMAHA SUNDAY BEE: MAY 25, 1919. S A YANKS PREFER AMERICAN GIRLS TO AUJTHERS -Europeans Who Chase Yanks, for Husbands, Short on " U. S. Geography and Due for Awakening. flew York. What's going to happen wfcen Parisian "poulet" 'meets Cynthiana, Ky., or a London Jass "lamps" Mankato, Minn., for me urst time? mats wnat some of the war welfare workers who have been meeting ana consoling some war brides arriving here with or with our tneir nusoanas trom overseas want to know. In some cases they iranKiy admit there is going to be a disillusionment and the little Fansienne who married a Yankee aner a short romance centering arouna a care is going to save enough francs to get back to mother. Put in others the girls who came from the big cities in for eign lands are going to settle down and make themselves right at home. JThe great majority of the soldiers ,vho married French or English girls abroad come from small towns or iarms in the west and middle west ? Some of the brides have confessed frankly that they were married "just 'for the -trip." They wanted to see America and "hoped the marriage would turn out all right." Others feaid they were swept away by the tempestuous wooing'of the Yankees. Practically all the war brides are short on American geography. They know about as much about the rela tive location of New York and Kan Ms City as a Kansas City girl knows bout the relative location of Paris and Belfort. And coupled with that, they have just come from Europe, where its only a hop, comparative ly speaking, from one big town to another. A French girl who married a Dal las, Tex., soldier and arrived in ad vance of her husband, wanted to lenow where she could get a taxi for i $)al!as. A young English girl from the same boat landed with $2, which Jhe thought would pay her trolley fare to her husband's parents in San Francisco. A rosy faced Scotch girl ."Wanted to know where she could get a ferry to Cuba.. The war brides are already up against mother-in-law. One Ore gon mother-in-law telegraphed her returning son that under no consid eration would she receive his new French bride. But like the majority ,of mothers-in-law, she gave in. 4 ;Yankee Engineers End , Anxiety of Aged Woman l San Francisco, CaL Time had ' been taking heavy toll, as the feeble, pottering footsteps and snow-white hair .testified. Yet she appeared to be a motherly, old lady. ' She asked one of the secretaries at the Army Y. M. C A. at the Presidio if they, could direct her so she could jget work. "My boys will be back rori Franca soon, then 111 not have ,lo wor. Just right now I haven't much, as my allotments haven't come," she explained. J, "Where is your home?" a "Y" man asked. '.. Gradually the story came out. Her bame is Mrs. C L. Browning. Her home is in San Francisco. Irregu larities in the records have caused jher to be without funds from the government for over five months Although she is 66 years of age and Very feeble, she courageously would have attempted to work. . A group of engineers from the re , teenriy returned 37th were standing near by and heard her story. Several quietly withdrew and made a bee line for their barracks. They re turned soon, however. One of them, X sergeant, "stepped up to the gray Jiaired mother, saying: "Pardon me, ma'am, but this here's from the boys. We understand your boys'll be back next week, and this will help you along till then." . t It was a substantial gift of money, showing the heart of the doughboy. Vs. M.S" Caught the Girls, But'M. M. C Made Them Shy v San Francisco On i troop train from San Francisco speeding east ward a practical joker placed a sign announcing that the occupants of one car were married men. i None of the soldiers could under stand why the young women at every station avoided that particular section of the train until a detach ment being sent from Fort Scott to Gamp Mills for discharge discovered the trouble. In bold letters on the side of the car were the initals f'M. I. C," and beneath an explanation reading, "Married Men's corps." i N. F. Sanderson, a Y. M. C. A. secretary accompanying the train, .writes to fellow workers "at the Presidio that a change which proved a marvel was made at Green River, Wvo. ' The. letters "S. M. S.!' were substi tuted and beneath was written, "Sin gle Men's Special." i At every station," asserts Sander son, the girls nearly climbed over each other to talk to the soldiers, secure addresses ami give them good things to eat. Marine Gets Rich In Germany ' Selling Soap to the Natives Coblenr, ; Germany,. (With the army - of occupation, by mail.) Tmst to a United States marine for resourcefulness. Thirty dollars a month, less allotments,, insurance and other things, isn't very much. And, contrasted tda mark, a cake of soap is a gold mine up here in Ger many. All of which leads to- A certain marine, had been broke for months. Then suddenly he be gan to -blossom forth with every- thing one could desire. Every day the mail brought him packages, and every day saw some new acquisition that had come to the private. :There were inquiries. But the ma rine only grinned. v - "I'm not robbing any banks," he announced. "The first thing I got next to up here in Germany was that soap was worth about its weight in gold. So I just wrote to every friend that I ever had for a few cakes of it and they all came through. That's i all." 0- Table Tumblers 6 for 50c Thin blown with 6-line band dee oration.
