Wheat Is headed in some districts and heading In others. An early movement Is assured with favorable weather, yet much wheat will be stacked. A crop of over 900, 000,000 bushels winter wheat Is promised. Spring wheat seeded in northwestern states Is placed at normal or a little be low normal. Chicago, May 23. Despite persistent selling today the corn market rallied at the last, owing to a renewal of wet weath er. Prices closed unsettled, 0 net lower to"4o advance, with July $1.6$ to $1.65 and September $1.67 to $1.68. Oats fin ished o to c down, and provisions un changed to a decline of 85c, Asertlons that corn planting would be held back several days in Important sec tions where rains had again started put the bears at a sudden disadvantage just before the session ended. Previously th market had shown weakness, Influenced by the fact that country offerings were more liberal than has recently been the case. The destruction of a big starch works at Cedar Rapids, la., whioh had been grind ing 20,000 bushels of corn a day, counted also s a depressing factor, and so, too, did Argentine competition in the east. Nevertheless, shorts covered freely when planting delays were again tn sight, not to mention Increased likelihood of need for much replanting. Oata reflected a sharp break la th value of barley. Polls Indicating that oon gress might not remove wartime prohibi tion were chiefly responsible. Slowness of cash demand, together with downturns In the hog market, and with a falling oft In clearancea from New York operated a a weignt on provisions. I Open. I High. I Low. Close. Yes'y. ' .1 MR" the Day FINANCIAL New York, May II Optlmlstlo trad prospects entertained by leaders of Industry, further relaxation of money rates and prospective modification - of the peace treaty were the most noteworthy contri butions to today's active and strong stock market. Until th final hour, when th upawing of prices became more general, the session, was In most essentials a duplicate of the preceding day. The undertone wa on of quiet confidence and aside from the gyrations of a tew specialties, the advance was almost continuous. The movement focuased largely around the steels and kindred shares, receiving its greatest momentum from the address of Elbert H. Gary before the American Iron and Steel Institute, in which he predicted prosperous conditions for that nldustry. Uuited States Steel rose steadily to 107. a gain of 4 points, and Its maximum of the year, the Independent group gaining 2 to 6 points. Motora, which depend on the trend of the steel market, also recorded many substantial advances, extending to 15 points in Chandler. Rails were among the leaders In point of activity and atrength at one period of the session, although their riBe waa com paratively moderate, but shippings and oils denoted further selling for profits. Proposed legislation of a protective character was helpful to the chemical shares, food Issues rising in sympathy. Metals, leathers and tobaccos were more restricted in their movements, but utilities derived further strength from the express companies division. In which gross ad vances of 2 to 6 points were partly can celed. , Sales amounted to 1,350,000 shares. Bonds as a whole were firm, but soma of the speculative rails were moderate con cessions on small offerings. Total sales, par value aggregated 110,875,000. Cool, rainy weather and. the lateness of some of the spring plsnted -crops, especially corn and cotton, seem to be more stressed at the Smaller markets, but Increased activity, strength and confidence Is revealed at the larger centers, while In Instances where weather conditions have been favorable and sea sonable temperatures have prevailed, the trend has been a very cheerful one. The Omaha Live Stock exchang was, represented by Traffic Managers' Stryker at a hearing before Inter state Commerce Commissioner Aitchiion in Chicago this week.. ' This hearing was on the live stock unloading charge at the Chicago market The charges, for thii aerv ice have recently been increased by the Chicago Stock Yards company.' The amount of the increase has been' added to the freight charges paid by the shipper. It has been the idea of the ex changes at other markets than Chi cago that if this unloading charge shall be passed to the shipper at that market, the custom will soon spread. ' It was shown conclusively at the hearing, according lo Mr. Stryker, that always prior to this time, car riers on account of having no un loading facilities of their own at public markets, have paid the stock yard company for unloading services.
