Washington,, May 20. (Special Telegram.) Should the vote on the woman suffrage amendment be tak en tomorrow in the house, as now seems likely, the entire Nebraska delegation in congress, with the pos sible exception of Senator Hitch cock, will go to New York at mid night to extend a iwelcome to the Nebraska boys, members of the 89th division, who are due to land Thursday tmorning at Hoboken from the Leviathan. In addition to the congressional delegation, Governor McKelvie is now speeding east to be on hand at the homecoming of the boys from the prairie state, while a large com mittee of Nebraskans under the chairmanship of Norris A. Huse is doing everything possible t give .the soldiers a rousing reception. Huse Sends Invitation. Members of the Nebraska dele gation today received the follow ing telegram from Chairman Huse of the Nebraska welcome commit tee. New York: "Invite you to join them with Governor McKelvie to meet the Ne braska men of the 89th division who return Thursday on the Leviathan, which may possibly arrive at 7 a. m. "Get in touch with Nebraska head quarters, 125 West Forty-second street, as soon as you get to New York." This telegram was supplemented by one from Governor McKelvie under a Lincoln date, who stated: "Leviathan bearing troops of 89th division, due to arrive in New York May 22. Other transports will fol low at frequent intervals. Plan reaching New York on 22d." Depends on Vote. If the vote on the woman suf frage amendment should happen to be postponed until Thursday, the Nebraska house members will not go to New York, although they are all anxious to greet the boys who have played such a splendid part in the European war. Senator Norris stated he would not go to New York if the legisla tive situation on the suffrage ques tion prevented his colleagues from joining in the demonstration in honor of the Nebraska boys' re turn S Congressman Reavis, who was appointed a member of the house committee to' accompany the body of Representative Vandyke of Min nesota, . who died suddenly this morning, to his home in St, Paul, was .compelled r to decline the ap pointment in view of the woman suffrage amendment and his desire to be present and vote for its adoption. Major Holdeman of York, recently of the 34th Division, Field artillery, stationed' during the war at Camp Cody, is in Washing ton, having attended the meetings of the National Legion at St. Louis. I 5 To Help Make Strong.Keen RedBlooded Americans 7 Many Omahans and Men From Up State Arrive With Telephone Unit The 408th telegraph battalion, composed of employes jif the Ne braska Telephone company, includ ing 32 Omaha and Council Bluffs men and telephone men from other Bell companies in -nearby, states, will reach Camp Dodge Wednesday morning to be demobilized at once. The battalion arrived in New York the latter part of last week after 18 months overseas service and left Camp Mills Monday night for Des Moines. The battalion sailed for France in November, 1917, and landed shortly before Thanksgiving. Since that time it has been constantly en gaged in the construction and main tenance of telephone lines in various parts of France. Since the armistice was signed it has been engaged in the construction of lines of com munication for the American ex peditionary forces in Germany. Some of the members of the bat talion were sent on detached service shortly after its arrival in France, but have since returned to their unit and the organization is returning practically complete. Expect 500 Women at Luncheon In Honor of Dr. Anna Howard Shaw Five hundred Omaha women are expected to attend a luncheon for Dr. Anna Howard Shaw at the Hotel Fontenelle Saturday noon, May 31. Dr. Shaw will be here as one of 10 speakers at the state convention of the Nebraska branch of the League to Enforce Peace. . Mrs. E. M. Morsman is general chairman of the women's committee. Commander of Spanish War Veterans Dies Suddenly Washington, May 20. Represen tative Carl C. J. T. STEWART MOTOR CO. Service Station TWO COUNTIES TO SHARE EXPENSES OF ROAD PAVING Long Stretch of Lincoln High way to Be Paved by Douglas and Dodge Counties. The board of county commission ers was requested by the Dodge county commissioners to share in the expense of paving a two and one-fourth mile stretch of the Lin coln highway which runs along the couty line. George Walz, Fremont "booster," brought the request and the Doug las county commissioners acted fa vorably upon it. "Dodge county has already ar ranged to pave the Lincoln highway all the way across the county," Mr. Waltz said. When the Douglas and Dodge county projects are completed there will be nearly 50 miles of the finest kind of permanently paved road, 16 to 18 feet wide, extending west from Omaha. v Columbus, Neb., has arranged for the paving of eight miles of the highway. Other places in the state have paving projects on the way. The commissioners say that in a very few years a splendid paved road will extend from Omaha across the state and farther. Tuesday County Attorney Shot well dictated the , proclamation which is to be used in advertising the special election for the $3,000, 000 bonds to pave 115 mile of D uglas Cvunty roads. The county commissioners confer red with Election Commissioner Moorhrad. He reported that he has not secured quite all of the polling places, but expects to have them all by Friday. The election may be held June 24 but Commissioner Neble satd he did not believe it could be held until July 1. Motorcycle Speeder Gets Five-Day Sentence In Jail L. C. Olson, 2109 South Ninth street, was speeding on a motorcycle so swiftly west on Farnam street at 8 o'clock this morning, according to Motorcycle Policeman Trapp, that the police judge sentenced hip to five days in jail. This is the first jail sentence given a speeder in Omaha this year. ; "You might as well go out and shoot somebody, as speed like yon did," Police Judge Fitzgerald told him. The arresting officer testified that he had to go 70 miles an hour to keep up with Olson. Burglars Steal Hoosier Officer's Auto From Garage Indianapolis, Ind., May 20. Council Votes $5,000 As Gty's Share Toward Fund for Celebration The city council today voted to set aside a special appropriation of ?A,UUU as the city s share toward a fund to defray expenses in connec tion with a home-coming celebration to be held during September for re turned service men. Mayor Smith, who asked that the appropriation be made, told the council that he believed the fund will amount to $50,000 and that the celebration will be a memorable oc casion. " "Captain C. E. Adams, of Omaha, commander of the Grand Army of the Republic, expects to be able to get General Pershing here for the day of the homecoming.
