Revelations o) a Wife What Happened After the Punch Bowl was Broken. As the full meaning of Kenneth Stockbridge's seemingly inad vertent action flashed upon me I unobtrusively dropped the cut glass cflp filled with the fruit punch which Milly Stockbridge had ladeled out for me. As it, too, shattered; itself against the polished floor the only traces of whatever it was the half crazed woman had tried to do were lost in the tricklfng streams of li quid trickling over the floor. My gown had miraculously es caped being spattered. As I step ped back to keep the liquid from ruining my slippers, I kept my eyes on my hostess, for I was tilled with a very wholesome respect for her ability to make things unpleasant. True, I had no real proof that she had put anything in the fruit punch which would harm me, although WEEK END SALE Royal Drug Company 19th and Heruey Phone Tyler 4482. Opposite Grain Exchange. 'Come and look them over. both her husband's face and action betrayed panic. The next instant, however, Milly Stockbridge sur prised me indeed. As if the crash of her cherished punch bowl had brought her to her senses, her face, first gray with fear and horror, broke up into frightened emotions. She swayed toward her husband with arms outstretched as a terrified child might have done, and the next moment she was sob bing against his shoulder, crying out desperately: "Oh, Ken, I didn't mean to, truly I didn't! But she made me so mad. I'm so glad you stopped me, but I didn't mean to. Say you'll for give me, Ken, say it, you know it's because I love you so say it, Ken, say it!" Madge Explains. "Hushl" His voice- - was hoarse, but there was a tenderness in it that the man must have been almost superhuman to have achieved. "People are coming, they will hear you. You know I forgive you and love you. Now pull yourself to gether. Let people think you're up set because your punch bowl is broken. Everybody knows how you cherished it." His eyes met mine above her shoulder, tortured eyes with a note of pleading in them. I knew what he wished, and spoke not to him, but to the woman whose face was hidden against "his shoulder. "I will explain things to anybody who inquires. Mrs. Stockbridge, so that you needn't be disturbed." "Thank you." I could hardly hear the words. Indeed. I hadn't waited for them, but went steadily forward to meet the two or three in quisitive souls who had heard the crash and promptly decided to in vestigate matters. The others, more composed or more well bred, were gathered around Dicky. Luckily, even with Milly Stock bridge's reputation, the shattered punch bowl spelled reason enough to her friends for her agitation. Her husband was leading her toward the kitchen as the vanguard of in quirers met me. Mrs. Stockbridge Reappears. "Oh, oh, that beautiful punch bowl!" the foremost woman ex claimed with a ghoulish look at the remains of the bowl on the wet floor. "And her floor will be ruined, oo. Milly is so particular about her floors. Something ought to be done about it right away. I think I'll " I stopped her with a little author itative gesture. "The maid is coming directly," I said, "and Mr. Stockbridge partic ularly requested that no one dis turb Mrs. Stockbridge for a few minutes. You know she is very ner vous anyway, and the breaking of the bowl has completely upset her." "I should think it would," observ ed another woman, the first speaker being occupied with glaring at me resentfully. "That bowl and the cups were the treasures of Milly's heart. They were wedding presents, you know, and the handsomest things in town." "How did you say it happened?" J. he hrst woman eyed me witti a glare that dared me to tell my story twice the same wav. "Why, Mr. Stockbridge offered to help her ladle out the punch, and as he did so, stumbled against the ta ble, upsetting the punch bowl. "Ah, yes!" she nodded her head sagely. "Poor thing, he's so awkward in his lameness, he must be a great trial to Milly." "Humph I" snorted the second wo man. "Shoe's on the other foot, I should say. There s Christine, now How's Mrs. Stockbridge feeling, Christine?" "She ban all right pretty soon," replied Christine stolidly. "Meester btockbridge he make her lie down She get up pretty quick." "Well! I suppose we might as well go back," the first woman said re luctantly, and with a sense of relief that poor Milly Stockbridge s secret was safe for the minute, I followed their retreating backs into the living room. So assiduously did they spread the news of the broken punch bowl that by the time Mr. and Mrs. Mock bridee rejoined their guests she this time with distinct traces of tears upon her face every woman in the room was ready with emo tional condolences over her loss. But Kenneth Stockbridge didn't leave his wife's side again. And when the evening guests had left she started to accompany Miss Hoi combe and me to the upper cham ber where our wraps were, he put a restraining hand on her arm. "Alice can do the honors, dear," he said tenderly. "You are tired out, and f m sure Mrs. Graham will ex cuse you." (Continued Monday.) Prentiss-Barnes. The marriage of Miss Annie R. Dear Miss Fairfax: I am a boy of 17, 6 feet 7 inches tall, and have a good complexion. I can dance and sing, and like music and a good time. I go with all kinds of girls, but found only one that I care for. Went with her for eight months, and she don't answer my letter, so what may I do? Is It right for a boy like me to go with one girl one night and another the next? I think it is, but may be mistaken. I tell the girl when I take her out all alone that I am out for a good time and I don't want to be married to any one girl. Now, am I right? CUPID. It is all right for a boy of 17 to go with different girls and it would be less embarrassing if you would omit the announcement that you are not seeking matrimony. That should be taken for granted until your con duct proves otherwise. If you have given ,the particular girl you speak of an opportunity to answer your letters and she does not do so, try to forget about it. You are too young to take seriously her failure to respond. Some Girls! Dear Miss Fairfax: We are two girls, 17 and 20 years old, and are coming to you for advice. Each of us is in love with two men, one a soldier and one a sailor. Both are very nice young men and we know we would be ideally happy with either. Now, our trouble is this: We really love the sailors best, but we think the soldiers look best in their uniforms. Which would you advise us to marry? Do you think we are too young to marry? What color of wedding gowns would look well with the boys' uniforms? Thanking you in advance for your advice we beg to remain, Sincerely Yours, BLUB EYES AND BROWN EYES. Marry the good-looking boys in stead of the ones you love. Don't let sentiment stand in your way. I suggest blue and white checked gingham for your wedding gowns. As I recall it, this is the material usually worn by inmates of feeble minded Institutions, and you might as well get used to it. Riid Ton flrA vouner for a serious love affair, but if you know yourself well ana are sure me gin you speak of is your ideal and you mm nnmiE-h for her to marrv her. then I think you can, in honor, tell her in a manly, straightforward way how you feel toward her. Your future relation with her will depend upon her answer to you. Ann You should go home with the man who takes you to the party. White pumps are always worn in the summer, especially with white, or light dresses. For general wear, however, dark brown oxfords are the popular footwear this season. The best coiffure is always the style which Is the most becom ing to the wearer. Charming ladles can be seen any day wearing the hair low, high, plain, curled, parted or pompadour. Young girls rather favor the plain hair dress this season, ear puffs concealing the ears. A aide part is usually becoming. lionesome Man From Fremont.
