CONTROL BOARD FAVORS PARDON FOR GENEVA GIRL , Superintendent Wants Wife of Soldier Taken Back to Home; Testified in McMahon Case. From a Staff Correspondent. Lincoln, April 24. The State Board of Control is rather inclined to take the broad view that Lucille iRae, the Omaha girl who escaped from the Geneva school for girls and later married, should be given a chance to make good, rather than send her back to the school to serve out her time. Miss Rae was one of the girls brought from the Geneva school by the board to testify against the former superintendent, Miss Mc Mahon, at the time of the hearing when Miss McMahon was asked to resign. Soon after going back to the school the girl escaped. Superintendent McAulay is rath er of the opinion that the girl should be brought back, taken to the Mil ford home where she should stay until her child is bom and then be taken back to the Ge'neva home. That an or ganized effort is being made by cer tain interests to control the con stitutional convention is in evidence in that headquarters have been es tablished in Lincoln and frank riar rison placed in control of the man agement of the campaign. 10 is understood that an executive committee has been selected con sisting of W. J. Taylor of Merna. representing the Nonpartisan league; C. H. 'Gustafson of Omaha, repre senting the Farmers' union; Con Mc- Carger of Lincoln, representing union labor; I. D. Evans of Kene saw. well-known oroaressive. and A. E. Sheldon of Lincoln, director of the legislative reference bureau. There will be appointed a state committee of 100, composed of one man from each legislative district, who will have charge of the work of organization and the ' raising of funds. Frank A. Harrison of Lin coln has been made secretary-treasurer and general manager of the or ganization. Arouses Wonder. Why A. E. Sheldon, who is al ready drawing down two salaries from the state, should find time td assist in propaganda tending to as sist any organization to capture the constitutional convention, a conven tion which is expected to draw up a constitution for the state in the interests of the state at large and not any political or industrial or ganization, is arousing consideraole wonder on the part of members of the legislature who worked for the passage of a bill which was intend ed to be beneficial to all and partial to none. It is hinted that Mr. Sheldon's connection with the state reference bureau and the records therein will be of great value in working up the propaganda necessary to make a successful organization and that he ought to be able to fine time to help along the work when not drawing the stipend of $2,000 a year, allowed him as director of the ref erence bureau, and the second of $1,500 paid him as secretary of the Historical society. Ex-Sehator, 85 Years Young, Tells Folks How to Keep Alert New York, April 24. There is no reason to fall behind the times as long as you can keep up with them, and that applies especially as one grows older. Chauncey M. Depew, former senator, 85 years old Wed nesday, gives a recipe for keeping as young as you used to be. "Premier Lloyd George," he said, "recently termed Premier Clemen ceau, who is almost as old as I am. the 'grand young man of France.' I may say I feel as young as the French statesman. Yes, there is a way, and simple. Keep in touch with the young. Join in their games; be a feature in the dance; romp the fastest and turn the quickest in the Virginia reel of the country dance; go up to the college and light your pipe and sing college songs; take your children to the theater and howl with them at the roaring farce and laugh with them at the comedy and cry with them at the tragedy; be their con fident in their love affairs and, if i they are not equal to it, write their love' letters. "And never stop writing some for yourself. Thus will the twentieth century. with its clearer purposes, its higher endeavors and its limitless oppor tunities, welcome us older fellows as the youngest and most vigorous of those who are to solve its prob lems and make its records." The grievances of the dock workers are to be arbitrated FRIDAY, APRIL 25, 1919. - AT THE THEATERS JUST to show you that a musical comedy can be entertaining and in every other way attractive, and yet have neither a jazz rhusic. nor jazz dancing, nor jazz singing, let us present "The Riviera Girl" in evi dence. If you are looking for a jazz, you will better turn elsewhere, for there is none in this; it does have carefully written tunes, melodies of the harmonious sort that soothe and do not torture the ear. As a mat ter of fact, the trap drummer is not once asked to jangle a cowbell, ana save for one false move made by an overanxious cornetist last evening, not a discordant note was heard The dialogue and the lyrics are in keeping with the music light, bright and piquant, without effort to skirt the risque. The plot holds nothing or novelty, but it is nanaiea in a way that piques and to the very end interest is sustained, even though that end be obvious. Miss Grace Walsh, new to us of the hinterland, is the "girl," and she is all that has been promised for her. Her youthful freedom of mcve ment in dance or walk, her sweet, pure voice,- clear and true in every note, ner unatiectea manner, ner vi vacity -and her sincerity all combine to produce such delight as does not often emanate from one person alone. Sylvia de Frankie gives us a subdued sort of soubrette that is fully as affective and enjoyable as the more boisterous sort to which we have become accustomed through recent experience. Henry Mowbray and Royden .Keith, splendidly sus tain the burden of the singing. on that 'side of the line, although Messrs. Riley and Romaine add one effective duet to a long list of worth while offerings. Messrs. Harvev and Farrington, the "comics" of the com pany, are responsible for a lot of merriment as the evening rolls along, getting u inrougn metnoas quite in line with the general pitch of the piece, but no less certainly because of that. Of the chorus, orie may at least sayf it affords variety; it is numer ous, and displays some really im pressive costumes, while the stage pictures and groupings have been carefully and lavishly worked out by that master of the craft, Julian Mitchell, and this leaves nothing to be said on this point. Those of the community who im itated Steve Brodie (he took a chance, you know) were very well repaid for the venture of attendance at the Brandeis last night. "The Riviera Girl" is cordially commend ed to all who like light music, com edy within reason, and can get pleasure out of the harmonious blending of light, color, sound, and youthful bodies. In addition to the stellar attrac tion at the Orpheum this week there are a number of high class acts.
