Confident Loan A Will Be.Oversubscribed Famous Evangelist in Interview Talks' About Every thing, From Cuban Strikers to Chicago's Chance at the Base Ball Show and Hun's Brutality. By Js DELMAN. KUYKENDALL. 'Billy Sunday, irrepressible in spite of a recent surgical operation and several weeks in -the langorous climate of Florida, arrived in Oma ha Monday morning to put ,the jazz into the Victory loan cam paign. For the first time in-my young life I had the pleasure of be ing, face to face with America's friskiest preacher during a mighty pleasant interview in his room at the Hotel Fontenello A half hour is hardly sufficient time in which to form a-finished opinion regarding a man, but I am frank to say that I like "Billy"' Sun day immensely. He bear all the ear marks of sincerity. He is American all oVer and all through. He believes in his job and backshis belief dp by giving every ounce of himself to "putting over" what he undertakes. He is s,o interested just now in col lecting funds for the funeral ex penses of Prussian autocracy that he can't even sit down quietly for an interview with another preacher. No Uniformed Lackey. , Sunday came to the door himself when I rapped, which was Itself quite a shock. I had supposed from some things that I had heard that he would have a uniformed lackey or something. He listened while I made the4 little speech introducing myself, then shot out a strong hand, grabbed my fist and pulled 'me into the room. ' ' This meeting was supposed to be an interview. It was more like a machine gun barrage. All I had to do was to touch the trigger and the gun started shooting. We talked of almost everything under the sun. Sunday has just come from Flor ida, where he held meetings in Tam'pa. He says he had a good time in that queer southern city, but couldn't quite understand some things. . . . : "Those Cuban cigarmakers are "a rummy lot, most of -them," he said. "While I was 'there they had two strikes. One was because they had no elevators to go to their work. The other was because the water tanks were not painted in the Cuban colors. Yes, sir, darned if they didn't strike for that." The Tampa meeting closed a week ago and Sunday will now spend his time for Uncle Sam until fall, t asked him if he thought the Victory loan would go "over the top." "Sure it will . We haven't the-en-thusiasm of war, but if you can show the American people that they have received something they will pay thev bill all right We helped save not only civilization and moral ity, but Christianity itself. - And the people are willing to pay for it if you can prove it to 'em. That's why I'm here, to show 'em." Omaha Best City. A question as to what he thought of Omaha .brought some real action. "Omaha is the best city in the Unit ed States. It has everything fac tories, transportation, a great farm territory, aggressive people... The committee wan Led me to go to New York and Boston, but I asked them to come out through the west. This is'God's greatcountry." He went to the window and with a sweep of his hand said, "That's some city." I suppose an interview' without SALES DURING: FIRST HALF HOUR EXCEED $5,000 Applications for Victory Notes Come With Rush at Court House as Soon as Chance Is Afforded. Sales in excess of $5,000 were made at the Victory Liberty loan in the lobby of thj court house within the flrst half hour it was opened. Mrs. William Archibald Smith, joint chairman of the bank with Mrs. Milton T. Barlow, was in charge when the bank started bus iness. Zana Thompson, 3420 Hawthorne avenue, was waiting to buy the first of the Victory Liberty loan notes, an 1 he was given that privilege William Smith, 620 North Eight eenth street, took the second. The third went to Charles Madison, 2217 Jefferson street, and Gould Dietz bought $5,000 of the notes as No. 4 A. F. Leermakers, 410 South Twenty-fifth avenue, was the fifth subscriber. Death Calls Inventor. Louisville, Ky., April 21. Josiah B. 'Gathright, inventor of the type writer tabular key and the electric tramway street sweeper, died at his home here today. some base ball in it would not be a real "Billy" Sunday interview. Any how, being a dyed in the wool fan myself, I wanted to know what he thought about it. Predicts Tight Race. "We are going . to have jut as good base ball this year as ever. And it is going to be a tight race in both leagues. Both New York teams, both Chicago teams, the Red Sox and the Phillies are up' and coming and will give these old United States some" real base ball. It ought to be better than ever after so many of the fellows have been playing in the big world series. Do I keep up with base ball? Does a duck swim?" Of course we talked a little about churches and religion. I have a faint suspicion that Sunday and 1 might develop some very grave dif ferences on theology, but with ref erence to religion "Billy" Sunday is a rank optimist with which attitude I cannot disagree. He really and truly believes in religion. He also believes that the churches are not about to die. He is of the firm opinion that Christianity has been saved to the world, and that the last great battle between the forecs of might and brutality and greed on the one side and right and justice and love on the other has been fought. The downfall of the Turk and the wiping out of the "dirtiest gang that ever wiped its feet on the virtue of womanhood," Sunday be lieves to have marked the beginning of the new reign of righteousness in the world. If you have never talked for half an hour to "Billy" Sunday you have .something coming. He is a "good be told that, of course. He is ner vous and restless and his face is be coming a little seamed, and there is a decided touch of gray in his hair, but he is "there" with the sort of pep and steam that is going to help I Uncle aam finish the job. And when it is finished "Billy" expects to go to his farm in Oregon and eat another square meal or two cooked by "Ma" Sunday. List of Victory Loan .
