Serve Educational Purpose
Boy Scouts to . Deliver Three-Minute Talks in Schools

"Kindness to Animals' Week,'
will be observed in Omaha, begin
ning tomorrow and closing with
"Humane Sunday," on April 27.
The event has been promoted by
the American Humane association,
with the local branches co-operating.

of the Omaha Humane society, is
being assisted by Omahans who

Monday Superintendent J. H.
Beveridge of the public schools and
J. E. Davidson, president of the
Humane society, will make the
rounds of the schools with Mr.
Bradley to distribute prizes which
have been awarded for. the best
tssays and posters on humane sub
jects. Boy Scouts to Speak.

boy scouts will deliver three
minute talks in the schools on kind
ness to animals. The school work
during the week will include object
lessons and stories appropriate of
the occasion.
Wednesday afternoon W. W.
Bradley will speak to the Benson
Woman's club, Thursday, Friday,
Saturday and Sunday a series of
slides will be presented at the
Rialto, showing animal pets of
prominent Omahans. These slides
were made from a collection of
photographs taken for Miss ; Lida
Wilson, who is one of the foremost
workers of the Humane society.
Exhibit Children's Posters.
Next Sunday boy scouts will
speak in the churches on "Humane
Sunday." All week an exhibit of
ISO posters, made by' school chil
dren, will be displayed at Milton
Darling's gallery. Banners reading
"Buy Victory Notes and be Kind to
Animals," will be attached to
horses during the week.
Humane work in Omaha has been
given a new impetus since the Hu
mane society has been assigned per
manent quarters in the city hall,
where Superintendent Bradley main
tains a staff of three assistants.
One of his city hall staff is an of
ficer who responds to calls and
makes investigations. This month
the city council entered into a con
tract with the Humane society for
the maintenance of the city pound,
which includes impounding animals
and other work in this connection.
"I am going to do away with the
old style dog catcher," explained
Superintendent Bradley. "Instead
of sending two men through the
streets with a wagon cage and a
wire hook, I intend to notify own
ers of unlicensed dogs that they
will be expected to take out li
censes for their pets within a rea
sonable time, and then if they do
not comply, their dogs will be tak
en to the pound. Experience has
shown that most people notified in
that manner . will comply. Stray
dogs, of course, will be picked up,
and vicious dogs will be un
pounded.
Will Teach Children.
Boys and girls of the schools will
be taught in particular this week
the reasons why they should be
kind to animals. They will be im
pressed with the confidence which
dumb animals have in their mas
ters, and instances of devotion will
be explained to them.
. "The whole proposition connects
up with our education," Said Mr.
Bradley. "We also wish the public

also a teacher in the Chicago public
schools. Complaints received by the
Board of Education caused Acting
Superintendent of Schools Morten
son to make this statement:
"Mrs. Marshall is an efficient
teacher. Her husband died some
time ago and she has a small child
to care for. I regard it unfortunate
that she finds it necessary to earn
extra money as a cabaret performer,
but so long as her acting does not
interfere with her school work, and
so long as she is not associated
with a rough resort, I see no reason
for taking any action."
