THE OMAHA SUNDAY BEE: APRIL' 20, -1919 11 B -What the Pathe Players Are Doing PATHE NEWS in t compara tively short time has estib- liihed a reputation for aero work which gives to the News a distinct and unique character. Some J of the achievements no tably over New York, of which unusual views were taken including a half-height shot of the Woolworth building and the Statue of Liberty have been highly recommended by army expects and civilian profes sionals. They especially com mended, also, the views taken of New York harbor on the occasion of the president's first journey to France; and the scenes, shot from the clouds, of the procession of ships into Boston harbor upon the return of the president. But the most re cent achievement, and one during which the evolution of the plane held spellbound 100,000 spectators, was! the automobile races at Santa Monica, GaJ. Charles Hutchison might have been a successful professional ,boxer had his heart not been set upon be ing an actor. In "The Great Gam ble," the new serial being made by Western Photoplays, he combines both the actor and the athlete boxtr. The exactions of the story are such that, frequently at the "end of a day's work, the dare-devil actor is even more bruised and exhausted than if he had been engaged in an actual professional contest. , It is a wonderful thing for a man to be a master of many trades and it is even .more so" when a young woman is , found possessing this good fortune. Ruth Roland, star of "The Tiger Trail," the new Pathe serial, could readily abandon her dramatic career which, of course she will never do and e cure a position in an architect's office. There are no sets in any of the productions with which she has been identified that she has not as sisted in the direction or construc tion thereof. Many of the novel devices used in "The Tiger'a Trail" are her brain children. Whenever the script calls for a scene to cre ate a. big, thrilling effect and there is a problem as to effectively ar ranging the "props," Miss Roland is always drafted into service and usually she has a ready solution to offer which carries with it a big "punch.- Her work in this great serial u marked by splendid daring and the perilous feats she" performs seem al most impossible to accomplish without injury to herself. "Congratulations, old man!" said Frank Keenan to a player at the close of a dramatic scene in "The Tide Book," now being filmed at the Brunton studios, Los Angeles. "You are the" coolest man under fire I ever sawl" lt't nothing at all, governor, ' the actor answered. "In tact, I'm quite used to being shot at. You see, I was a guide in the Maine woods for five years before coming to south ern California." , Dolores Cassinelli, the "Italian Cameo "Girl," the star of "The Un known Love," besides being a talent ed musician, is mistress of four lang uages. Milan Stefanovitch, appearing in "In Secret," the Pearl White-Robert W. Chambers'serial now being made for Pathe, is a real war hero. He was a lieutenant in the Serbian army during the early years of the war, and wears three medals for conspicuous bravery in action, one of which was presented by King Pet er of Serbia." He took out his first papers as an American citizen over a year ago and immediately enlisted in the United States army, being discharged with the signing of the armistice. Harold Lloyd is the man who has made the horn-rimmed spectacles famous the world over and today he has hundreds of thousands cf competitors. For Lloyd got out a pair of the big bows when they were a novelty in the world of to day and on the screen in every land there was to be seen a peculiarly lanky individual in all manner of funny poses, but never without the horned-rimmed adjuncts to the eye sight. Lloyd would sooner be seen with out shirt maybe even pants than his specs. He hat appeared in many a bathing scene as a burglar, as a pirate, policeman and almost every conceivable character but never yet has his face appeared without peer ing from behind the billboard like glasses. Some bright press agent is going to top a lot of Harold's easy earned dough some day, getting up a drawing contest on how he lo.iks in the "altogether." , Elmo Lincoln and Grace Cunard are to star in an 18-episode serial, "The Modern Hercules," to be made at Universal City. Madge Kennedy and her com pany have gone into the Mojave desert to make some scenes for "Leave It to Susan," a new comedy arama. Louis Bennison's third photoplay A real artist's model has been en gaged to play the part in "As a Man Thinks." Miss Elaine Amazar, model and a well-known opera sing er, has the position. How It Was. When Fatty Arbuckle was in New York city recently, com pleting arrangements with Fa mous Players-Lasky for his big $3,000,000 contract to .produce pictures for Paramount for three vears more, he naturallv tried n see as many shows as possible in.nis lew days sojourn in the big town. The Century Roof was one of the places he visited and there he met Enrico Caruso, also a Paramount star, and probably the greatest opera singer in the world. , "How do you do," said Signor Caruso, "I am very glad to see you, Mr. Arbuckle, in propria personnae." "Oh, I don't think it is as bad as that," laughed Fatty, "but I am mighty glad to meet you." "I think," smiled the great singer, "we motion picture actors should stick together. I wish that I could act like you do, Mr. Arbuckle." "And I," returned the come dian, "wish fervently that I could sing like you, Signor Caruso." "Ah," sighed the other, "if we all could be and do what we would like what a wonderful world it would be, eh?" "You said something," de clared Fatty. And then they went their sep arate ways.
