Chicago, April 8. Corn took a decided new upward swing In value today owing mainly to the fact th'at receipts were of less volume than had been looked for. The markets closed strong, 2W4Hc net high er, with May $1.59 1.69 !4, and July $1.52 1.531.,. Oats gained lHc and provjsions 25 to 90c. All deliveries of corn ascended to new high levels for the. season. Talk of car shortage holding' beck the crop movement was current and it was predicted that there would be even less corn available here in May than at present. On the other hand, the extremely bearish character of the government crop report on .winter wheat seemed to have been thoroughly discounted In advance. Pit traders sold on the bulges, but covered quickly when any important commission house buying ap peared. Absence of aggressive leadership on the part of the bears was especially noticeable at tire finish, which was at about the topmost point reached. Oats displayed Independent strength. Stirprise over the large decrease of the visible supply served to stimulate demand. In provisions the government report on breeding sows tended to lift values. Be sides, export business was good. Packers led the buying. Cash quotations Corn No. 3 yellow, M.61tgl.2H; No. 4 yellow, J1.561.60; No. 5 yellow, $1.58. Oats No. 3 white, 68?i69ti; standard, 69H 70c. Rye No. I, $1.72H1.73. Disregarding the shifting end less favorable phases of the peace conference, higher rates for money and the uncertain status of the steel in dustry, pools extended their bullish ma neuvera In various quarters of the stock market today. Substantially higher quotations prevailed at the broad opeuing, a few specialties making immediate gains of 2 to 6 points. For the most part these were materially enhanced during the session, Incessant profit-taking making little Impression un til the final hour. Noteworthy exceptions to the higher trend encompassed rails, coppers and steels, although the latter came moder ately forward later, despite prospects of an adverse United States Steel tonnage statement on Thursday and misgiving con cerning the dividend for the first quarter. The backwardness of rails in the face of one of the most remarkable crop re ports ever issued by the government, was the subject of considerable eommant, but seemed to cause little restraint among professional traders. Sensational features Included American International corporation, which again eclipsed all other Issues as the most ac tive stock, holding the greater part of its seven-point rise, or a net gain of 16U points in two days; Burns Bros., at a net gain of 1314 points, Industrial Alcohol up 5 and Kelly-Sprlngfleld Tiro and United States rubber at advances of 4 and 4 points, respectively. Oils, motors, equipments, sugars, ship pings, tobaccos, fertilizers and chemicals once mora reflected I he interest of pro fessionals at gross advances of from 1 to 4 poinis. but United States Steel closed unchanged after Its brief rise of 1 point. Sales amounted to 1.300,000 shares. Liberty and other domestic bonds were steady, but foreign issues, notably Paris 6s, yielded fractionally. Total sales, par value, aggregated $12,850,000. Old United States registered ?s gained on sales, the 2s and 4s gaining on call. ' Clos- Sales Ing. in Hun, High. Low. Bid. Am. Bt. Sug 43 79, 78 U 78 U Amer. Can 185 51 60'i 51 Am.
