Dunn's tomorrow will say: With full recognition of the uncertain state of the highly important Iron and steel Industry, due to differences over the pries question, it Is nevertheless clear that business added something to its recent re covery. The growth of confidence which Is nearly everywhere manifest, seems greater than the expansion of actual opera tions, but activity broadens with each week's passing and Is supported by sub stantial contributions to the list of help ful factors. New opportunities for the extension of American enterprise abroad are not in frequently making their appearance. With many domestic concerns that had been completely or largely engaged on govern ment work now turning to other channels of production and with prices of some commodities at a less Inflated position, the whole economic situation steadily assumes a more natural aspect and the benefits beginning to show in a business develop ment. Weekly bank clearings, $6,318,565,8$. New York Coffee. New York, April 4. Corn took a sudden upward swing in value today as a result of bearish traders having over-reached thomselves. July and September Jumped to the topmost prices yet this season. The close was unsettled, 1 to 6 cents net higher, with May $1.67 to $1.68 and July $1.49 to $1.50. Oats gained 1 to 1H cents. In provisions, the finish was unchanged to 40 cents higher. At first the corn market had a de cided down slant owing more or less to competition from Argentina and to the removal of the Argentine minimum ex port price. Besides, the action of the ex change directors In ordering a statement of all trades In May corn exceeding 25.000 hushels continued to handicap the bulls during the forenoon. After midday, how ever, offerings became scarce, and shorts who tried cover found It Impossible to escape without suffering a hard squeeze. Notice, that the United States shipping board had made seven more ships avail able for the transportation of food stimu lated some of the late buying. Oats were governed by the action of corn. Trade early was slow, but later be came brisk. Provisions after ranging lower with grain ascended quickly when the bulge took place In corn. Selling on the de cline was not aggressive. The movement In prices on the stock exchange during the greater part of today's session was ex tremely uncertain, but the entire list rose spiritedly In the final hour, in response to a sweeping demand for rails, especially Investment shares. There were no specific developments in connection with Inquiry for transporta tions, but board room gossip persisted that negotiations were under way which would place the railroads of the country upon a more assured footing. Southern Pacific was the dominant fea ture, Its advance of 44 points being at tended by free accumulation of numerous large Individual blocks. Other transcontlnentals rose 1 to 2 points and grangers strengthened on announce ment that the St. Paul directors had fi nally entered Into contractual relations with the railroad administration. Yet another helpful factor as affecting systems traversing western and south western territories, were the estimates of crop exports which emphasized recent re ports of excellent conditions, including In creased acreage. Much of the early Irregularity of mar ket leaders was traceable to the steel dis pute with Director General Hlnes. sudden abandonment of the Mercantile Marine 1 ,ih .1.. TTnitAri States government and further contradictory news from the peace conference. Steels, motors and their specialties, and sugars, chemical and express stocks shared most extensively with the later move ment In rails, strength prevailing at the active finish. . 1 Am .n.lar hilt domestic Issues, including the liberty group, reflect ed to better tons for nign-c as. sales (par value) aggregated $14,800,000.
