In the Spring a young man's fancy well you know the rest of it; but a woman's fancy turns to her clothes and her house. A new dress for her house usually means new paper with perhaps draperies to set it off. Do you always find and select paper that you like to live with afterward? Of course, you generally would pre fer a more expensive paper than the one you buy that is human nature but do you select the best possi ble paper of those you can have? It is far too frequent a custom to go to the shop, look over the sam ples and pick out whatever suits the fancy regardless of place it is to fill. There are just six colors to choose from, yellow, green, blue, violet, red and orange, with of course, innumerable tones of each color. These colors have different effects on the nerves and eyes. We have warm colors, red, orange and yellow, which have the effect of cheer and excitement. These colors are the ones to use in a room th;t receives little light, for instance, a north room in a city house. Yellow is the best color from the stand point of light also, though cheerful, it is less exciting than red or or ange, both of which colors should be used in moderation. Red in a room has the effect of making the walls seem closer together. A per son of nervous temperament should never live in a red room, though it might have a beneficial effect on one with an easily depressed nature. Blue, green and violet are the cool colors and have opposite effects from those of the warm colors. They are only good in rooms with lots of light, preferably a southern exposure. Green is the most restful to the eyes and nerves, apparently; blue is aus tere in its calm, and violet is the tone of shadows. With these things, in mind, decide what your room in to express, then select the color ac cordingly. The Wall ai a Background. The next point to be borne in miiid is that the wall of a room is the background for the people and things in it. A background, as the word suggests, should not stand out, but should be unobtrusive. What ever color is chosen, the paper should not be so bright that it calls attention to itself. One should not be conscious of the paper in any room. On the other hand, a paper should not be unobtrusive to the point of deadness. If you wish a plain paper, as many of us do, it is possible to get a paper that is interesting through its tex ture. We have the oatmeal papers, solid color with flecks of white which melt away at a little distance. Yet these flecks of white prevent the monotony of a perfectly plain color. We have the papers which are pressed to imitate burlap, and more beautiful still, the grass cloth which is a real fabric with a lovely sheen. Thus in any of the papers, the deadness of the plain surface is broken. However, the perfectly plain paper is a safe choice always. When you get to patterns, you have a chance at more interesting things, but also a choice at infinitely worse things. A plain wall cannot be bad, at worst it may escape be ing good, while a patterned wall may be a nightmare. A pattern in wail paper should never be naturalistic, but should be conventionalized that the wall may be recognized as a flat surface. A grape pattern may be beautiful, while realistic bunches of grapes are an insult to the flat wall surface they try to represent. The simplest kind of patterned paper is the two-tone paper with almost a shadow pattern. This makes a good background for the objects in the room, bhadowy pat terns in several neutral tones are also obtainable. When one comes to decided pat terns in several colors and finally to the pictorial papers, there are two things to bear in mind. You can not use pictures on a strongly pat terned wall. If you want pictures, let patterned paper alone. Other wise, you are hanging a picture on a picture. With a geometric de-, sign, watch out that you do not get something that the eye will be led to count. What is more nerve-racking that to be ill in a room with a countable pattern on the wall! With pictorial paper, every detail in the room must be subordinated to the paper and then a beautiful effect is possible. For the amateur, the plainer, less distinctly patterned pa pers are most successful, relying on the draperies, perhaps, to furnish the strong color note. When the mushrooms are peeled and stems are removed, dip in melted butter and season with salt and pepper. Place on gridiron with the cap side down, and broil quickly, first on one side and then the other, and serve on toast. If the mushrooms are first prepared it will not take more than five or six minutes to cook them and if one does not wish to use the stove they may be pan broiled in the chafing dish. Just before serving add a little butter to each. Sunday Dinners Will Be Very Costly Fresh Vegetables and Luscious Strawberries on the Market for Those Who Can Pay the Price. Overdoing a Compliment. Lady Randolph Churchill's mar riage (her third) recalls an amusing story when she was just plain Miss Jennie Jerome, of .New York. Like her father, she was a keen politician, and on one occasion she delivered a rousing speech in favor of General Grant, then standing for the presidency for the second time. When she had finished speaking, some enthusiast in the audience shouted: "Miss Jerome forever 1" She stepped forward. "Sir, I thank you," she said, "but I do not wish to be Miss Jerome forever." Heart Beats By A. K. Suppressing father Is not only a task But a difficult feat Because father Has fits. Yes fitsl Real fitsl Horrid fits! Of temper With which the family Must contend. All goes well With a few exceptions Until father Arrives in the Evening Then Sans song Sans singers Sans harmony In the home For father has a Habit of Scolding and grouchu'.g Around his family. He loves them And provides for them And appreciates them But he doesn't know He ippreciatei them Because he has grown To believe that he Should be the Official kill-joy Of the home. And so it has Become necessary For the family To suppress father In order that he may Realize that we love Him and he loves The family We find it a difficult Task because father Had grown so accustomed To being cross That he almost forgot How to be himself. Father has a sweet Disposition and a lot Of love in his soul And that is why We banded together To suppress father And make the home Safe for the family. It is a tough job. SELAH. Butter has had its ups and downs decidedly in the last seven days. Friday, the price fell to 57 cents, Saturday it was up to 62 and to day it is sailing up past the 67 cent mark. Eggs, too, are high 40 and 45 cents, although cheese is but 38 cents. Seek recipes of cheese, Mrs. Housewife. Strawberries, too luscious, red, but small of box are on the market for 25 cents a( pint. Oranges are from 60 to 50 cents, grape fruit, 10 to 12J4 cents. Rhubard, too, is fresh this week California rhubarb at. 12J4 cents the pound; cauliflower, 1'24 cents; to matoes, 20 cents a pound and cu cumbers. 30 cents each. Vegetables, now common on the market, retain their same price; radishes and shallots, 7 cents the bunch; onion sets, four suarts for 25 cents, and seed potatoes, $1.60 per bushel. Canned goods vary decidedly the canned fruits are higher and have prospects of still being higher, but vegetables, canned, are at least 2Vt cents cheaper each. Flour and Coffee The staples ol the shopper are in the fashionable line also. Flour is up $1 on every barrel, meaning 25 cents the sack. And, indeed, "the men who know," say that there is no prespect of it being lower until after July, when the new wheat comes in. Coffee merely added 2 cents to iU prire. New potatoes should, by the right of custom, be among the possibles to bhy, but owing to the storms and rains in the south, they are not in evidende. Meats alone are stable. The high est for the season are lamb and chicken which sell for 40 cents a pound an unusually high price for this time of year. The shopper must verily be a fi nancier. Apricot Roll. Two cups of flour, two table spoons sugar, four teaspoons baking powder, half teaspoonful salt, two tablespoons solid vegetable fat, abut two-thirds cup milk or water; mix and sift the dry ingredients, cut in the shortening, add the liquid gradually! using a knife to mix; roll out on a floured board until one-fourth inch thick; spread with the fruit, which has been cooked and sweetened but he juice drained off; sprinkle a few nuts over the top of the fruit, then roll the dough into a long roll as for cinnamon rolls. Cut into one and one-half inch slices and place, cut side down, in oiled muffin pans. Bake in a hot oven for 20 minutes. Serve hot with the above fruit sauce.
