Chicago Grain and Provisions. Chicago, April 3. Much nervousness de veloped in the corn market today regard ing action of exchange officials in asking members for a statement of open trades In May corn exceeding 26,000 bushels. Dips and bulges followed tn rapid succes sion. The market closed unsettled, 1 c nts net lower to 1 cents advance, with May $1.55i to $1.55 and July $1.45 to $1.45. Oats finished cent to 1H cents down, and provisions varying from 25 cents off to 70 cents advance. Owing to the Irregularity which char acterized the numerous price changes in th corn market, It looked as though many traders were trying to even up all out standing deals and thus get away from the necessity of a statement. Selling centered chiefly on the May delivery. Later months were relatively firm, and gossip was current that there would not be any big accumulation of corn here be fore September. On the other hand, Argentine shipping advices were dis tinctly bearish. Announcement, however, that permits which have been required for railway shipments to domestic pri mary markets had been abolished seemed to have no lasting influence as a price making factor. Big stocks gave an advantage to the bears In oats. Advanced quotations on hogs made the provision market average higher, despite packers' selling. Strength was chiefly in ribs and pork. $1,614(1.6::; No. 4 yellow, $1.5S1.59 No. 6 yellow. $1.661.67. Oats No. 3 white, 664f68c; standard, 67J ?i'6c. Rye No. 2. $1.74 1.77. Barley $1.03)1.16. Eliminating the familiar methods of acceleration employed by pools snd associated professional in terests, trading In stocks today was fea tureless, the demand for high-grade shares showing almost steady diminu tion. Conservative Interests were sgaln re strained by the confusing character of Paris advices. snd the refusal of Director General Hlnes of the railroad adminis tration to accept the schedule of steel prices fixed by ths Industrial board. This latter eplsods, which took Wall street completely by surprlss, oocssloned unsettlement at the outset and In ths lster dealings, steels and equipments re acting one to almost three points. Reassuring statements from Washington in ths course of the session were of little avail, a heavy selling movement setting In towards the close, which not only ef faced most of the day s gains, but left many leaders at net losses. United States Steel wss forced down to $7 and with other Industrials, shippings, oils and specialties registered extreme re versals of 3 to 4 points, the market fin ishing with a heavy undertone. Metals were among the few exceptions to the reactionary trend, American Smelt ing and several other active coppers hold ing firm to strong. Atlsntlc Qulf slso rebounded from Its minimum price but rails forfeited their moderate advances. Sound investment conditions were in dicated by the keen inquiry for war fi nance bonds, but this demand found no reflection In the general market for high class securities.
