Weakness developed In the corn market today largely as a re sult of sharp declines in the value of rye' and barley and owing to reports or Argen tine corn was being bought to come to this country. The close was heavy, to 2 cents net lower, with May 11.48 to $1.48 and July $1.37 to 11.37. Oats lost 1 to 2'A cents and provisions 7 to 15 cents. Bearish sentiment which dominated the corn market during the last hour was In decided contrast with the fact that throughout the rest of the day prices,' although nervous, had shown gains. The rallies were ascribed to a renewal of con fidence on the part of bulls who had-been disturbed by estimates of a huge ex portable surplus In Argentina and by gos sip that prices for the March delivery here had become artificial. Toward the end of the session1, however, it becam evident that the market was overbought, and prices crumbled rapidly after rye and barley had suffered breaks varying from 2Vj to 6 cents. It was said also that Argentine cargoes had been purchased to arrive both at United States gulf ports as well as' New York. Oats gave way with other cereals and because of expected rapid seeding. The most sig nificant feature of the day on the Stock exchange, aside from the prominence of a fw specialties, was the diminu tion of dealings, ths total being the smallest of any full session In several weeks. ' Oil, motor and distilling shares led the stronger issues at gross gains or 2 to 6 points, shipping, tobacco, leather and pa per shares recorded extreme advances of 1 to 3 points. The strength of metals would have oc casioned surprise, In view of the reduced dividend of Inspratlon copper, but for the fact that In the metal trade an ..extension of the recent inquiry lor the refined product was reported. Steels and equipments derived thslr moderate strength from an encouraging statement issued by Judge Gary, although report from other trade sources were not of the same hopeful tenor. Easier rates for call money and advises from Paris reporting progress by tks peace conference stimulated renewed ac tivity by pools In recent speculative fa vorites, such as Mexican Petroleum, Texas cemjiany. General Motors, Industrial Alco hol, Sinclair OH and Amarlcan Sugar.
