From a Staff Correspondent. Lincoln. March 24. In order to bolster up sentiment against the Harriss amendment to House Roll 64, the education bill. Senator Reed and Representative J. Reid Green, were instrumental in having the office of of the chief clerk of the house of rep resentatives today strike off 500 copies of a petition heading, which was to have been circulated all over the state and returned to members of the house and senate with signa tures of .petitioners prejudiced aginst the educational measure, as proposed by the senate. The peti tion heading is as follows: ' To the officers ana members of the Ne braska state senate and the Nebraska house of representative:. It Is with surprise and apprehension that we, the undersigned Americans and citi zens or Nebraska, learn that tne majority of the Nebraska state senate have agreed to substitute the Harriss bill pr the house roll No. , dealing who tne question ot parochial schools. Refer to German Schools. It li a fact too obvious to require' argu ment that the German parochial scluols, and German organizations of all kinds have been the conscious or unconscious agencies through which the poison of German "kultur" has attempted to weak en America, In fact did so weaken Amer lea that she stood trembling for .two years while the hideous monster of central Eu rope ravished neutral nations and mur dered American citizens on the seas. The people who are now petitioning the Nebraska legislature against the House Roll 64. are largely the same people who Justified the sinking of the Lusltanla and petitioned congress to forbid Americans sailing the high seas; they are largely the same people who ' petitioned congress to forbid the sale of war munitions to the nations who were defending themselves against the Huns. During the period ot the war, because of the lack or laws and tack of official courage, the patriotic citi zens have been compelled to band them selves together In councils of defense and other organizations and to use the means that the, emergency justified to counter act the effects of German propaganda and bring our entire oltizenship Into at least a passive support ot the war. No law la strong enough if it does not ef fectively block for all time the agencies throughwhIch' enemies have been able to poison the minds of a' larga element ot our citizenship of foreign extraction even down : to the third generation ot those born in America. The argument, that we should not su pervise parochial schools" because many of them are harmless, la. not sound. We have tawa forbidding the use of certain weapons, explosives and chemtralsT not be cause the people would misuse them, but to protect the public against vicious peo pie and fools. 1 We would consider any weakening of House Roll No. 64 an abject and cowardly surrender at home to the very forces over which our soldiers and sailors have won such a splendid victory abroad. Senators Are Roused. Senators in the legislative as sembly when shown a copy of the petition heading were loud in their denunciation of the conspiracy to prejudice their action of Saturday in adopting the Harriss amend ment. "The language of the petition is unfair and misleading," said one of tne leading members ot the upper house. 1 lie senate stood for the Americanization of the schools of rthe state and is not for any un- American propaganda and the Har nss amendment appealed to the isense of fairness of the majority of the body for the reason, that it was in accordance with the constitu tional lines and did not seek to abridge religious liberty. .tactics of this kind are repre hensible and are decidedly beneath the dignity ot any legislative as sembly, and the persons who are responsible stultify themselves as well as the legislature in attemp ting to prejudice a measure which is up tor consideration and should be acted on with fairness and honesty." After the first batch of petition neaaings ' naa been run ott and a number of copies had been shown to senators those responsible for the move held a hasty consultation and cut out the whole of the second paragraph and amended the fifth paragraph. Senators and members of the house who are of a liberal mind say the reception of the inspired peti tions, which are expected to come in Uabout Wednesday, when House Roll 64, as amended, will be acted upon, will have no effect upon them. McKelvie Sends Letter. Governor McKelvie has sent a let ter to all members of the legislature in which he endorses H R.
