Here's a Story in Cold Facts
and Figures That Still Reads
The wealth of a nation is based on the bars of gold
and silver it has in its coffers. The wealth of a com
munity is based on its insurance.
Omaha, as one of the largest insurance centers of
the country, tops the middle west as far as an assurance
value is concerned.
The total net income of our home insurance com
panies, of which we have 24, in 1917 amounted to
$23,502,244. s
These figures represent facts cold blooded facts
and show the important part Insurance plays in t)ae
city's industries.v
Twenty-three million, five hundred and two-thousand,
two hundred and forty-four dollars in 1917, the
year of the last official census.
Since 1917 Omaha has increased its population by
more than one-fourth and naturally the amount of in
surance placed inthis territory has equally been in
creased. . ' . -
, "
To take stock fire insurance first, we have total
receipts of $57,64, which represents the business of
the companies with a home office here.
Next are the mutual fire, tornado and hail insur
ance companies, which,, as it is well known, play a
most important part in a farming and live stock cen
ter as Omaha. S ' ( '
These companies did a business of $19,602 in 1917.
The vstock legal reserve life insurance companies,
of which the city boosts five large corporations, had a
net income of $2,551,546."
Mutual legal reserve life insurance companies, in
Omaha in 19l7 did a business of $522,547.
" ' Owing to tne fact, that this figure represents an
income of but two companies, the item is quite a large
one. ' '

ation in Omaha. This company alone, in 1917, did a
business'bf $1,417,510.
We three casualty and surety companies of- the
city, all of which are very strong organizations, did a
combined business amounting to $582,544.
Not less than seven mutual assessment health and
accident associations make their home in Omaha. The
1917 business of these organizations amounted to
$664,263. 1 . ' - .
s - . f
,The first place, in the Omaha insurance world,
take the four fraternal beneficiary associations of
which vthe largest alone did a business of $14,927,803.
The next company in line had a net income of
$2,479,803. The combined income of this single group
of insurance companiesjamounts to $17,686,578.
Besides the 24 -insurance firms who have their
home office in Omaha, there are several hundred life,
fire and casualty insurance companies mostly east
ern concerns collecting annually in premiums mil
lions of dollars in Nebraska.
All of these companies not, only re-invest the
money collected here, in Nebraska securities, but also
about 70 per, cent of eastern money, taken in on east
ern risks.
This money is invested in Nebraska, because our
state pays much higher interest rates, than the Atlantic
seaboard states. r -
