Chicago Grain.
Chicago, March 17. Highest prices yet
this season resulted In the corn market
today, chiefly from wet weather
hindrances to farm work an dto tha crop
movement. The close waa strong at 2c
to 5o net advance, with May $1.42 to
$142Vt, and July $1.35 to $1.354.
Oata gained e to l4c, and provisions
60o to $1.00.
Nearby deliveries of corn showed the
greater strength, as heavy rains, through
out the belt had rendered country roads
Impassable in most sections. Under such
circumstances the outlook wa that there
would be no adequate supply 6f corn
available for delivery on May contracts.
At the same time, the meagerness of the
stocks on hand was greatly emphasized
by the prospect of large purchases of food
stuffs for Germany. A broad demand en
sued, but owing to profit-taking sales the
top prices reached were not held. Addi
tional buying of Argentine corn that was
reported did not lead apparently to any
reselling of domestic corn.
Unfavorable weather for plowing and
seeding had a bullish effect on oats. Be
sides, eastern atock were said to be
light.
Provisions scored maximum gains all
around. The Impetus came from grain
strength and from likelihood of increased
European orders. The market, however,
was only moderately active.

FINANCIAL
New Tork, March 17. The stock market
today entered upon It fifth consecutive
week of speculative activity, the extenatv
operations being accompanied by develop
ments helpful In the main to the long ac
count. All the new was not of an encourag
ing character, however, as demonstrated
by a sensational break In exchange on
Paria cud the adverse annual report of
tha Amurican Smelting compuny. together
with similar statements submitted by
other Important Industrial corporations. .
Price movement often were olent
and conflicting, even In Issues of the same
groups. - This confusion strongly suggested
further profit-taking and more aggressive
selling by professional Interests which are
reported to be oommltted to a reaction.
Oils eclipsed all other issues, their
strenth probably resulting largely from
Mexican advloea, which were calculated to
make for greater stability of foreign con
cessions. Mexican Petroleum, Texaa Com
pany and Sinclair Oil made extreme gains
of 5 to e4 points, the latter leading the
entire market In point of activity.
Other conspicuously strong stocks at
gains of 3 to 6 points encompassed the
equipment, fertiliser, paper, food and
metal divisions also low priced motors,
and various utilities, chiefly gas shares.
United States Steel followed Its courso
of the past fortnight reacting sharply,
making full recovery and falling back
again later. Ralls and shippings de
veloped a reactionary tone, and tobaccos
and leathers displayed little of their re
cent strength.,, .Sales amounted to 1,150,
000 shares.
Reflecting th weakness of Paris ex
change, French Municipal bonds reacted
fractionally. Liberty Issues eased lallgbtly
and the general bond list was irregular.
Total sales, par value, aggregated $10,900,
000. Old United States coupon 4a gained
14 per cent on sales, others unchanged on
call. "
