Washington, March 6. Italy has been warned by the American gov ernment that unless she puts an end to delays in movements of relief sup plies to the newly established Jugo Slavic and Czecho-SIavic states, steps will be taken to cut off the flow of American foodstuffs to Italy. It was stated jtoday in an authori tative quarter that the Italian gov ernment had caused intolerable con ditions by the blockade she has im posed against the Jugo-Slavic coun tries and which operates also against the Czccho-Slovaks. The blockade has not ,been wholly effective, but many delays have been caused, re sulting often in holding.up supplies, the need of which was desperate. ' Reports from Taris of the exist ence of chaotic conditions because of the blockade have not been con firmed here, but it is known that much unnecessary suffering has been caused, directly attributable to the stand taken by Italy. News from Paris that representatives of Great Britain and France were outspoken in their condemnation of the atti tude of Italy, had been cabled to the United States, but the action of the American government in sending its warning to Italy was taken before that news came. No reply has yet been made by the Italian government. Ihirt Coming Out ? Pcch! Pooh! TALK DY PRESIDENT Say Letters from Voters "Overwhelmingly" Against President's Proposed Plan for League pf Nations. By JAMES R. NOURSE. (Universal Staff Correspondent.) Washington, March 6. Senators who are opposing the league of na tions were disposed today to scoff at the president's assertion that the sentiment of the American people is "overwhelmingly" behind him in his determination to put through the or ganization of the league. By way of reply the senators di rected attention to the increasing number of letters which they are re ceiving from voters in all'sections of the country expressing condem nation of the league plan. Senator Lodge, the republican leader, de clared that the letters received by hiin are in the proportion of nine against the league to one for it. Senator Gronna of North Dakota nade a statement to the same ef fect. His mail, he said, is "over whelmingly" against the league. Farmers Against League. Senator Poindcxter of Washing ton declared that if the president carries out his announced intention of "telling the people on the other side of the water that an overwhelm ing majority of the American people is in favor of the league of nations." he will mislead Europe. Senator Gore of Oklahoma said the farmers of his state are aeainst the league. while many of the residents of the towns seem to be for it. Senator Sherman of Illinois char acterized the president's New York speech as an "impassioned invoca tion mingled with invective." How the president figures out he can get the league ratihed, the sen ator added, in view of the fact that 50 senators are pledged against it, "is more than I can understand, al though it must be remembered that the president was never a professor of mathematics. "About the only thing the New York soeech accomplished," Sena tor Sherman continued, "was to crowd Howard Taft off the first page." - 200- Tanks Will Advertise Victory Loan Campaign Washington, Mrch 6. The Telegraph says: "Mr. Wilson's opponents in the senate have not bound themselves to any course of action too firmly to adopt another if the president should 'make good' with American public opinion in the end. "All depends up on the sense in which that opinion may make itself manifest when the treaty of peace and the league of nations have been given final form. Therefore, for the present we must leave this strange and uncertain sit uation."
