Fred Schamel, Head of South Side Water Office, Dies at Home Fred Schamel, 49, manager of the South Side office of the water works and prominent in Ak-Sar-Ben; died suddenly at 10 o'clock a. m. Friday, at the family residence, 2424 Pierce street. Schamel had influenza a month ago, but had seemingly re covered. Four days ago he com plained of feeling ill while at work and wnt home. His wife and sister, Mrs. Ernest F. Lehmann, and his father and two sisters living in California, survive Arrangements for the funeral, which will probably be Sunday, have not yet been completed. Schamel was superintendent of the carnival grounds for Ak-Sar-Ben. - Slippery waxed' floors are pre vented by the use of liquid wax and a light wax mop. Niece of Fred Stone - in Omaha Talent Play Omaha is to see a niece of the famous Fred Stone who is now play ing in New York in the musical With death hovering close, C. S. Smales of Dunbar has directed a touching appeal to The Omaha Bee for aid, in locating his wife, who has been gone for over four weeks. , Mr. Smales is on the verge of death. He is afflicted with heart trouble and the physicians whom he has consulted fear for his life. To the slow an 1 unbearable tor--ture of waiting for Certain death is added the pain of seeing his chil dren surferinjf in the throes of influ enza and daily growing weaker. And the wife is not at home. She left four weeks ago, how or why Mr. Smales does not state in his letter. The husband is broken both in health and spirit. He is nearly ready to quit the unequal struggle. The letter, written to The Bee, follows in part: "I ant appealing to you to help me find my wife, who has left our home. I am ill with heart trouble and the doctors do not expect me to live. All the members of my family are also down with the influenza. . "I do not think my wife knows our condition and I hope that she may see the item in your paper and re- I turn td our home. "I am anxious that the item be I inserted at once. Pleads Guilty to Burglary, is Sentenced to Ten Years Roy Slack pleaded guilty and Carl Rose entered a plea of not guilty when they were arraigned riiis morning before -Judge Redick- in criminal court on charges of break ing and entering the store of So! Brodky. A sentence of one to 10 years in the state penitentiary wa imposed on Slack. Rose will stand trial and will be represented by the public defender. Rose was a companion of Roy Slack, when a deputy sheriff, went after them to St. Joseph, Mo. They escaped from the train near Lang- don, Mo.
