Chlcsgo, Feb. 15. Sharp advances In the corn market today resulted from persist ent buying on the pert of houses with eastern connections. The close, although unsettled, was 2c to 3o net "higher, with May $1.23 to $1.23 and July $1.1$ to $l.lTs. Oats gained l'.io to l?c and provisions 17c to 85c. Murh of the ardor to buy corn appeared to spring from the strength of the New York stock market and from an advance In foreign bonds. At least, this was the main reason ascribed for the change in front, which seemed to have been made, by heavy eastern traders who recently were conspicuous on the bear side of corn here. Before their buying attained any force this morning the market was tending downward, as a result of the scat tered selling. Tho pressure, however, was not of a decided character, and the sub sequent upturn had no serious check until the last half hour. Then the aggressive ness of the bulls was overcome, In a meas ure, by unverified report that the strikes In Argentina were over. Oats followed closely the changes In corn. Trade wss of liberal volume. Provisions again jumped as high as the rules would permit. Later the prices of hogs exercised only a transient depressing Influence. Packers bought. What In substance amounted to a very disastrous rout of the short Interests marked the course of to day's brief but very llely session of the stock exchsngs. Prices were little more than firm at the outset, but the general list soon strength ened under the Impetus of a buoyant de mand for oils, shippings and some of the motors and popular equipments. Ralls were hesitant for a time, the weakness of St. Paul common and pre ferred causing Irregularity In that quar ter. Later, however, transcontlnentals and coalers Joined the upward movement, at taining gains of one to two points. Buying of oils, particularly pan-American Petroleum common and preferred at oxteremo gains of 5'.3 and lift points, re spectively; also Royal Dutch. Mexican Petroleum and Texas company at mater ially higher levels, soon spread to the automobile division, notably General Mo tors and Stuti. the latter rising three points on lbs favorable annual report.
