rather light run for a Monday. Trading
on beef steers was steady on desirable
kinds on the early rounds, steers selling
up to 818.00. , Closing trades were dull
and 10 to 15 cents lower on everything.
Butcher stock was very dull and prices
anywhere from steady to 25c lower.

Hogs Receipts today were cut down,
161 loads, estimated at 11.500 head, with
a carry-over of aomethlng like 8,000
head, making about 20,000 head on aale.
Choice hogs sold largely steady, with a
few sales at possibly strong to 6c higher;
tops went up to 817.45, with tha bulk
probably from 116.60 to 817.20, the mar
ket on the whole being held to the mini
mum at this point. Tha lighter receipts
enabled packers to take a few of the
lighter weight hogs, but thera will be a
carry-over ot 6,000 or 6,000 today.
Sheep Receipts were light, 14 loads,
estimated at 3,300 bead. Buyers were ap
parently In need of supplies this morn
ing and purchased a few here at strong
.to 10 and 15 centa higher than Saturday.
Lambs are selling largely at $15.60 and
$15.65, with a top undetermined. A
string of choice Colorado ewea brought
$10.40 this morning.

Heavy receipts of grain were on hand
today, with 117 cars of wheat, 223 cars
of corn, 139 cars of oats, 13 cara of rye
snd 41 cars of barley. Corn pricea gen
erally suffered another big loss, the range
of the market being from unchunged to
8 cents lower, the bulk selling approxi
mately 3 to 5 cents off. Chicago options
were considerably lower for the early
session, though recovered tho loss at the
close. Cash corn prices as a result were
atronger at the close than at the begin
ning of the session. The rally on the
Chicago market waa said to be due to
the expectation of the' February hog price
being fixed at the January figure. Corn
offerings were In good demand at the
decline and virtually everything was
sold. Oats were 4 centa lower for the
bulk. Holders aold readily at the prices.
Rye was 1 to 6 cents off and barley
dropped 4 to 7 cent. Wheat wa sflrm,
though trading was very slow.

In the corn market Closing prices of corn
were strong at o to lHc net advance,
with May $1.16 W and July $1.14 to
$1 1 4 'i . Oata finished unchanged to lic
off, and prftvlslona unchanged to a decline

From the beginning till the end It was
a whipsaw market In corn, mainly as a
result of conflicting Interpretations of a
statement which Food Administrator
Hoover had Issued touching the problem to
be solved tomorrow at the Washington
conference over hog prices. Assumptions
were general at first that the Hoover
statement implied maintenance of the
January hog basis. Then a directly op
posite view became prevalent, and still
later another complete reversal of opinion.
While bears were temporarily In control
the market dropped to the lowest level
yet this season for all deliveries except
January. A big cut In shipping rates from
the United States to Great Britain aided
the final upturn of the market
Oats displayed Independent weakness.
Neither exporters nor domestic shippers
were bidding.
The only demsnd -for provisions was
from shorts. Pork snd ribs finished st the
maximum setback allowed for a single
day.

New York, Jan. 27. Although a spirit
of moderate optimism prevailed In finan
cial clrclea today, reflecting the weekly
reviews of leading financial Interests, the
stock market made indifferent response,
tradera evincing a disposition to await im
pending events.
Foremost among these is tomorrow'
session of the I'nlled States Steel direc
tors, when the fourth quarterly statement
of last year is to be ratified, together
with action on the common stock.
Movements of United States Steel dur
ing today'a lethargic dealings conveyed
little hint or Intimation of any chunge In
the recent rato of disbursement. Steel
closing at a small fractional gain after
having lost about a point. Other Issues
of the sam, class reacted 1 to 3.
OH were again the diverting features.
Texas company making an extreme ad
vance of 6 points, while Mexico Pe
troleum retrieved the greater part of Its
4-polnt reversal. Motor accessories and
Hide and Leather preferred comprised
the other firm to strong stocks.
Shippings furnished a concrete Instance
of cause and effect. Marine preferred
dropping 4 points on announcementa of
a drastic cut In ocean freight rates by
British ships, Atlantic Gulf losing 3.
