THE BEE: OMAHA, SATURDAY. JANUARY IS, 1919. BUTLER OBJECTS TO SKI JilID SEGOETSESSIOiS Commissioner Accuses His Col leagues cf Unjust Action in Reversing Decision cn Police Salaries. - City Commissioner Butler is aroused because city council met yesterday afternoon without notify ing him and reversed the action which it had taken in regular ses " f-'on Thursday morning on the po licemen'! request for endorsement of their wage demands. "These sudden and secret meet ings are not only illegal, but they ate unjust to the people," said Mr. Sutler. "The law provides that no special meeting shall be called with out serving notice on the council men. Yesterday afternoon's meet in;,' was called and over with a sud denness that was startling. I left my ollice about 2 o'clock and was out looking after street work until about 5:30. Returning at that time. 1 found notice on my desk that mooting was to be held at 4 o'clock. Of course the meeting was over by that time and council had re versed its morning decision. "I learned that Commissioners Ure "and Zimman voted just as they had in the morning. Mayor Smith changed his vote, explaining that he did so because the minimum salary figures for patrolmen and vdetectives mentioned in the schedule turned down at the morning session had been removed. The schedule endorsed by council at its special meeting yesterday aft ernoon will add about $78,000 to the annual pay of the police department, it is estimated. Commissioners Ure, Zimman and Butler all sounded notes of warning against giving the policemen exhorbitant raises, point ing out that the taxpayers will have to stand the bill and that they will hold the city council responsible to a large degree. The schedule now endorsed by a vote of four out of the seven com missioners gives maximum salaries ranging from $10 to $25 higher than the 20 to 50 per cent raises en dorsed by council last TuesMay. It is agreed, however, that the council shall determine by ordinance what salaries shall be paid to men in various grades up to the maxi mums mentioned in the schedules. "Eliminate Personal : Feelings," Judge Day Urges at Lodge Trial "For the good- and wefrare of the order," is the title of a little drama being enacted in Judge Day's divi sion of the district court. The, case was brought by Louis Pixlcy against Mayme Hedrick Cleaver, grand chief of honor, and other officers of the . state grand lodge of the Degree , of Honor. . It is alleged that these officers ap propriated funds of the grand lodge contrary to the rules of the order. The whole situation harks back to the disaffection which occurred nearly a year ago among the mem bers of Washington lodge No. 27, of Omaha. Mrs. Cleaver states that when she visited Washington lodge during last March, "the scene was tumul tuous and the language vituperative." Judge Day urged the litigants to eliminate the personal feeling.
