AIRPLANE MAY
BE ON DISPLAY
AT AUTO SHOW
Manager Negotiating to Put
' Flying Machine on Display
at Exposition; Dealers
Enthused.
Omaha's 1919 auto show, from
March 10 to 15 at the auditorium,
may have a real airplane on dis
play. Clarke G. Powell, manager of the
show, is negotiating with M. Pel
ton, who has opened an airplane
agency, to make the huge plane now
on view in the Pelton salesroom
at, exhibit at the auto exposition.
Most Omahans never have had a
chance to get a real, close-up look
at an airplane, and in view of the
plans now being made to put Omaha
on the Woodrow Wilson airmail
route, the exhibit at the auto show
would prove a tremendous attrac
tion. All Have Show Fever
Arrangements for the show are
progressing rapidly. The get-together
dinner of the 700 dealers and
their bankers at the Chamber of
Commerce last Tuesday night served
to put the show fever in everyone.
Visiting dealers went back home
full of automobile optimism, and as
sured their Omaha distributors they
, w Id bring in a record crowd of
1 vis.ton and prospective purchasers
to the show.
Walter W. Head, vice president of
the Omaha National bank, one of
the speakers, told the dealers that
a successful auto show meant busi
ness generally was booming.

TO HANDLE PAIGE CAES IN
OMAHA TERRITORY.
I '
! '''' :
Announcement was mauc last
week that the Nebraska Paige com
pany, headed by R. M. Austin, for
merly special representative for the
Paige-Detroit Motor Car company,
had taken over the distribution of
Paige cars in this territory.
The new firm is located in the
Masonic temple at Ninteenth and
Dodge streets and the corner loca
tion is being remodeled to suit their
needs.
Prospects in the Nebraska terri
tory look so favorable to Mr. Austin
that he chose to sever his connec
tion with the factory to take on the
distributor's contract in this territory.
Heath and Laughlin Back
from School of Aviation
ITerbert H. Heath, who has been
in the coast artillery, and J. J.
Laughlin, in the aviation mechanics
school at St. Paul, are back with
Toozer-Gerspacher Motor Co.
Three other Toozer-Gerspacher
men are still in the service. The
firm, throughout the war, main
tained an exchange of letters for
the boys, the office making copies
of each letter received from any
one of the five and forwarding them
to the other four. In that way
every man knew what hi former
associates were doing in the war.
The firm also wrote a letter to each
of the boys each week.
NEW GAR TO BE
INTRODUCED IN
CITY THIS WEEK
Auto is Made in Detroit by
Well Known Manufacturer;
Has Been Constructed
Past Two Years.
For a long time rumors have been
current about a new automobile that
was to be announced this month.
Now Guy L. Smith tells that the
new car is on the way. It will ar
rive this week and make its debut
to the public Thursday. It is known
that the car is made in Detroit by
a manufacturer of long established
reputation, other than that Guy L.
Smith will say nothing.
Most people have expected that
after the war some new cars would
be announced. This car, however,
we are told has been in the process
of building for over two years. Dur
ing all of this time it has been un
dergoing constant tests and -trials in
Detroit and it does not come to the
public as a car in the experimental
stages, but one that has won the
approval of the leading automobile
engineers.
Issues Warning Against
Fake Motor Companies
The ' Treasury department has
released a warning to the general
public and particularly motorists
against indiscriminate investment
in stock of fake mofor companies.
The investor contemplating the
purchase of automobile stock is
advised to write the Capital Issues
Committee, Treasury department,
Washington, for its approval. This
new committee was established to
block the efforts of mushroom
motor companies of questionable re

Packing Shears.
An admirable pair of shears for
cutting sheet packing or other sim
ilar tough material may be made by
filling serrations along one blade
from which the temper has been
drawn with a triangular file. The
blade is then hardened and temper
ed again. The teeth or serrations
keep the packings from slipping
along the blade, a trouble generally
encountered with this type of material.
MUCH WASTE OF
TIRES IS CAUSED
BY SMALL SIZES
Figures Show Only Seven Cars
Out of Twenty-One Makes
Use Specifications Called
for by Tire Firms.
Only recently it has come to of
ficial notice how great waste in tires
is due to using equipment of too
small dimensions. When the com
mercial economy board at Wash
ington was presented with a com
parison between the tire equipments
actually carried by 21 of the leading
makes of automobiles and the equip
ments recommended by the tire
manufacturers, bated on the weight
of the cars with load, the astonish
ing fact was revealed that only sev
en of the can listed are equipped
with tires as large as called for by
the tire companies. -
The new regulation sanctioned by
the government, which goes into
effect within the year, greatly re
duces the number of tire sizes, so
that this question of proper equip
ment must again be taken up by all
motor-car manufaoturers. It has
developed from the tabulation of the
nearest new sizes for this same list
of automobiles that only one more
car, or a total of eight, will be equip
ped with tires as large as recom
mended by the tire companies. In
commenting on this condition,
Ralph Murphy, engineer for the
hranklin Automobile company,
pointed out that the Franklin car
was the only one in the list that ex
ceeded the tire size prescribed by
the tire manufacturer.
The Franklin Company is con
stantly conducting experiments oti
different size tires and different
types of tires in order to keep in
formed as to just the right combin
ation to render maximum mileace.
If economy of tires and reliability
of tires are desrred, concludes Mr.
Murphy, the thing to look to first is
the size of tires in proportion to the
weight of the loaded car, and sec
ondly, to observe how the weight is
distributed between the sprung and
unsprung parts.

Coal Shortage Will Not
Bother Illinois Farmers
Any possibility of a coal shortage
is not bothering the farmers of
Illinois. Through the use of their
tractors they are hauling logs to the
wood yard and there sawing them
into cord wood with the same ma
chine through the application of its
power by belt to a circular saw.

New Hupmobile Price
The new price of the Hupmobile Touring Car and Roadster is
$1335, f. o. b. Detroit, effective January 7th.
Motor car labor and materials remain at their high-cost level,
and are likely to continue unchanged for some time to come.
Nevertheless, the return of our production to a quantity scale en
ables us to restore the Hupmobile to this lower price basis.
It took the curtailment enforced by war to make us realize how
strong a hold the Hupmobile has upon our people.
The shortage revealed strikingly that it was this car people
wantedwanted, because of the peculiar kind of fine and faith
ful service they were sure it woul d render.
The Hupmobile is not classed as a four-cylinder car, but almost
always referred to in terms of its remarkable performance and
its very marked economy. ,
The value of The Comfort Car, and this unusual service and econ
omy, is greatly enhanced by the new and lower price.
