Fess Makes Statement.
Representative Fess of Ohio,
chairman of the republican, con

sued a. statement today recalling
disastrous results of former differ
ences over party organization and
warning against a "scramble for po
sition" now.
"The country must await 1920 o
place full authority of the govern

can party," said the statement.
"Whether this will be done or not
will depend upon how we use the
victory given us by the people. If
tl.e house now, in its first oppor

an organization upon any ground
other than the country's welfare
through party soldidarity, it will be
a serious mistake, too apparent for
any comment.
"The vote of confidence in the last
election, which was emphatic as to
its significance, will be as quickly
withdrawn as it was given if either
personal ambition or factional
rivalry be permitted to descend to
any bitter scramble for position,
tither in the speakership or the as
signment of committees. No such
consideration can be allowed to dic
tate our first official act."
Auburn Man Jailed
for Reckless Driving
Following Collision
R. C. Holt, real estate man of
Auburn, ran into a car driven by
E. H. Dessauer, 4102 Farnam street,

to inquire if any one was hurt, but

A special policeman was near at
hand and saw l the smash-up. He
jumped in a Ford car and along with
Dessauer pusrued Holt and finally
caught him after he wrecked his car
by running into a sewer hole.
Holt was taken to the station and
a charge of reckless driving, drunk

Girls Leave Detention Home;
Two Policemen Suspended
Seven girls escaped from the de
tention home Friday night. i.
Mrs. Berger, who is in charge of
the detention home, says she thinks
some girl who has been at the
home and has since left, gave one of
the girls a duplicate key to the front
door. '
About 6 o'clock this girl and six
others put on their hats and coats
and walked out, and did not even
say good-bye.
Officers Patrick Coffev and E. T.
Slezewski, who were on duty at the
time, and who claim to know noth
ing of the escape, were suspended.
This jnakes the total of escapes
for the week ten, as three girls got
away the early part of the week.

OMAHA MAY HAVE
MEMORIAL FOR
DEAD SOLDIERS
Movement Started to Erect
Monument to Heroes Killed
Overseas; Will Ask May
or to Call Meeting.
A. permanent memorial to be
erected in honor of th Omaha sol
dien who gave their lives for their
country was discussed yesterday at
a meeting of the war activities com
mittee of the Chamber of Com
merce. It is felt that the matter is strict
ly an Omaha proposition and it is
likely that the mayor' will be asked
to call a meeting of various or
ganizations to take up the matter
in the near future.
Randall K. Brown, in speaking of
the memorial' after the meeting,
said:
"We believe it ought to be some
thing practical, but it is going to
take some time to develop and de
termine just what is proper."
"What we are most interested in
just now," added Mr. Brown, "is
the taking care of soldiers that are
coming back, looking after their
employment and getting them back
into the proper channels of civil
life."
There ha,ve been many sugges
tions made recently as to just what
kind of a Jnemorial would be most
appropriate. Some have suggested
an arch in a prominent place in the
city, while others have favored the
time-honored monument with the
names of the heroes permanently
inscribed upon it. However, there
seems to be a general feeling that
the proper memorial is one which is
more the embodiment of life, such
as a hospital, orphanage or .some
public building dedicated 1 to the
memory of the soldiers of the pres
ent war.

"Best Show This Year" j
Is Verdict of Gayety j
Offering This Weelc
"The best show I've seen this
year," was heard fhroughouHhe lob
by of the Gayety last night. And
if's a fact. The show is a scream
from start to fiinish.
Harry Morton is as funny a com-;
edian as has played on any stags'
in Omaha this year.
Not only are his regular jokes
funny, but he is extemporaneous
and that is where he gets the
house.
Zella Russell as prim donna
is .superb. Her customes are gor
geous and her voice shows the i
amount of training that she must f
have gone through to make-it a.s
pleasing as it is. Her specialty is
'big time' act' in itself and it is ;
only with reluctance that the audi-j
ence allows the show u progress. .
Eleanor Hart, the ingenue prima
donna,is a very beautiful woman and
her songs simply bring the house
down. , , ,
Harry K(orrison with his Alad-1
din's lamp, has a remarkable voice j
and puts his numbers over with
'punch.
The chorus is composed of a
pretty group of girls and they are
all good dancers Irene Meara, the
soubrette, is a very tiny little bit oi
humanity, but she is as full of 'pep
as a bottle of charged water.
