A belated account lias been re
ceived of a recent automobile ac
cident in which "R. A. Leussler, vice
president of the Omaha & Co mti!
Bluffs Street Railway company, and
Alvin Johnson, attorney, suffered in
juries. In the rush of matters con
nected with the street car strike the
real news of that accident was tem
porarily suppressed.
The accident occurred at Thirty
eighth avenue and Leavenworth
street. A prominent physician, who
happened to be passing in his auta
mobile, ordered the victims into a
house, where he attended them. He
examined Mr. Johnson and an
nounced that he Jiad suffered a
broken arm whereupon whisky wa
given as first aid. Mr. Leussler
watched the proceedings for a while
and then he exclaimed to the doc
tor: "I believe I have suffered a broken
nose."
"We don't prescribe whisky for
broken noses," the doctor replied.
"I'll be derntd if I can understand
why whisky will help a man with a
broken arm and be of no value to a
man with a broken nose," was Mr.
Leusslcr's rejoinder.

Rapid strides are being made by
T. M. Gillan of the Chamber of Com
merce in lining up the automobile
freight and live stock transportatior
in and out of Omaha. Working with .
the Nebraska Railway commission,
Mr. Gillan has been able to briuji
?bout the establishment of a stand
ard and uniform rate.
The rate as established i!
i of a cent a mile per 100 pounds,
up to V2 cents, the diiTerence de
pending upon the classification and
the character of the freight.
Attention is now being paid to the
return load problem, and already il
has been worked out to the extent
that it has become possible for the
(tuck owners 1o generally carry full
loads to and from the point:; from
which they start, or to intermediate
towns.
Mr. Gillan is now figuring on 3

ers now have to go from one job

their loads. The erection of a ware

German Potash Mines Arc v
Stripped of Machinery
During the last few days the Ne
brafka potash producers have been
receiving a large number of ex
tremely high offers for their potash 1
which is now in storage, as well as
occrs for their output during the
next two years. After investi
gating the source and reason for
these offers at this particular time,
the facts were borne out that the
buyers of potash had very recently
learned that the entire potash mines
of Germany had been stripped of
their machinery during the war
period, and tl iron used for the
manufacture of munitions. Thi?
rondition naturally brought aboul
the desertion of the German potash
mines, and good authorities esti
mate that it will be between eight
and ten years before these mine!
can again be put into opertion. This
will mean that for a long time there
will be a heavy demand for Ne
braska potash and that the industry
will continue upon a firm basis for a
good many years to come.
