DOUGLAS COUNTY CARRYING HUGE BlaaaaBlBSlBBIlBllBakaiSBljavJBt INUtBiptSS Report of State Auditor Shows Bonds Carried by Counties of State Larger Than Two Years Ago. From a Staff Correspondent Lincoln, Dec. 10. (Special.) The bonded indebtedness of the counties of Nebraska, as shown by the audi tor's office amounts to $45,191342.91. Of this amount $3,398,867 . are county bonds, $299,500 precinct bonds, $29,677,846.58 city and village bonds, $10,642,624.87 school district bonds and $1,239,504.51 drainage and irrigation. Two years ago the bond ed indebtedness of the counties of the state was $42,154,198.07. Naturally Douglas county has the largest bonded indebtedness, the amount being $21,508-426.07, while Lancaster county stands second with $3,034,579.39. Gage county is the next, running into the million figures its bonded indebtedness being $1, 017,640. Arthur county has no bond ed indebtedness while Thomas coun ty has but $1,000 against it. Rev. Joseph Buckley to Be Buried Beside Wife Clarks, Neb., Dec. 10. (Special). The body of Rev. Joseph Buckley who died here Saturday was sent to day to Callaway for burial. Rev. Mr. Buckley was 83 years old, born in England, and had been identified with the Methodist church in Ne braska for over thirty years. He came to Nebraska in 1881, and built the Methodist church in.. Clarks the following year. He has held pastorates all over the state. Bonds of Norfolk Man Fixed at $1,500 on Theft Charge Norfolk Neb., Dec. 10.-(Spe-cial Telegram). The. bonds of Ben Meyers, local auto dealer, charged with stealing a car and employing Charles Wheeler to drive to Win ner, S. D., were fixed at $1,500. Up to a late hour Tuesday he was un able to furnish bail. A warrant charging automobile theft has also been issued for the arrest of J. Kreahn, who lives near Winner, S. D. D: O. ROBERTSON JOINS THE SKINNER PACKING CO. " I D. C. ROBERTSON. D. C Robertson, formerly cash ier and director of the Famers Sav ings & Trust Co. of. Marinette, Wis., lias accepted the position as treasurer of the Skinner Packing company of Omaha. Mr. Robertson and family now are at the Blackstone hotel, but have leased the Dr. Louis Moon residence at 1000 Mercer park road. In' addition to his banking inter ests at Marinette, Mr. Robertson was identified with the State Land Mortgage association there. He also was identified prominently with civic affairs and was a hard worker in Liberty loan and other war cam paigns. He was captain in a com pany of the Wisconsin National Guard. Train Porter Arrested for Transportation of Liquor Beatrice, Neb., Dec. 10. (Special) E. M. Hicks, a porter on the Bur lington road, was arrested yester day at Wymore having in his pos session 19 pints of liquor. He was found guijty of bringing liquor into dry territory and was fined $100 and costs, which he paid. A. H. Chavet of the Ellis vicinity died of wounds received in action in France, according to information received here yesterday by his par ents, Mr. and Mrs. Ed. Chavet. He was 24 years of age and was among the first to enlist when war was declared. Austin. Bates, Clairvoyant, Released; Served 90 Days Kearney, Neb., Dec. 10. (Spe cial). The case pending in district court against Austin Bates, .clair voyant, has been wiped off the docket, attorneys on behalf of the defendant paying all court costs, thus releasing their client after he had served three months in the county jail. Washington, Dec. 10. The sailing of seven additional transports for American ports with 52 officers and .3,000 men was announced today by the War department. B. Ray mond of Des Moines, who' came to Fremont last week to attend the funeral of her sister, Mrs. Harry Gerrene, died of pneumonia at the home of her parents. Mrs. Ray mond suffered an attack of influenza soon after she arrived in Fremont and pneumonia developed. Mrs. Gerrene died of the same ailment at Kansas City. Mrs. Raymond was 29 years of age and is survived by her husband and daughter. Abandoned Car Found Near Fremont Belongs in Omaha Fremont, Neb., Drt. 10. (Spe cial Telegram.-A Hudson touring car abandoned near Ames when the gasoline supply ran out belongs to the W.F. Smith Realty company of Omaha, according to information Sheriff Condit received from the factory irt Detroit. The owners have been notified. A Ford touring car. was found by the roadside west of Fremont this morning. It is be lieved to have been stolen. The supply or gasoline had been ex hausted. - The car had no license lumber. , Lid Goes Back in Snyder. Fremont, Neb., Dec. 10. (Special Telegram.) The flu lid has been clamped on again at Snyder. A new national good roads program under, which the present congress will be asked for an appropriation of $500,000,000 was reported to the American Asso ciation of Highway Officials by the executive committee of that organi zation last, night. Yankees to Bun Train. Labache, Austria, Dec. 10. The first direct train from Geneva to Lieubliana, capital of Slavonia, will leave Thursday. William Hoh enzollern, the former German em peror, has attempted to commit sui cide, following mental depression, according to the Leipsic Tageblatt. which is quoted in a Copenhagen dispatch to the Exchange Tele graph company. A member of the former emperor's retinue who pre vented Herr Hohenzollern from car rying out his intention received a wound, it was said. Royalist Plot Paris, Dec. 10. (Havas). Prince Henry of Prussia, brother of the former German emperor, has pro claimed the establishment of a roy alist party in Germany, according to reports from Holland. Writing Autobiography. London, Dee. 10. William Hoh enzollern, the former German em peror, has had several interviews at Amerongen with two German ex perts on international law with whom he discussed his personal po sition, according to an Amsterdam dispatch to the Express. These ex perts arrived and left Amerongen in a rather mysterious manner. It is understood, according to the dispatch, that Herr Hohenzollern is writing his autobiography and a his tory of his reigp. - He will explain his attitude before and during the war, it is said. The book, which will be long, is intended for publica tion, or if its author is tried before an international tribunal, may be read as a part of his defense. Germans Seek to Fool Allies Into Delivering Material for Railroads Paris Dec. 10. CHavas.1 Re ports from Sarrebruck, Rhenish Prussia, indicate that the delivery of German railway material is being carried out very slowly. "The Ger mans tried at first to pass off worn out rrench railway cars, out only two or three cars out of every ten were accepted. - The French authorities are all the more severe in this connection, as it is declared they have proof that the Germans during the war had built quantities of cars which they held in preparation for a proposed economic invasion to follow up the expected German victory. Unfilled Steel Orders. New York, Dec. 10. Unfilled or ders of the United States Steel cor poration on November 30 were 8,124,663 tons, according to the cor poration's monthly statement issued today. He is very cheerful and sweet-tempered and his mother is very good to him. The mother makes over dresses for the little girl, although you wouldn't know it, the child looks so very neat. The father deserted them a few months ago the mother cannot speak En glish, and she had a hard time get ting along. The 10-year-old boy is a real little man speaks English, interprets for his mother and ex plains how she came from Spain a number of years ago, and- where they have lived in the United States since then. These children would appreciate most of all a good Christ mas dinner. The neighbors have been good to them and they are very thankful. A good, big basket, please remember. This family has been hav ing bad luck ever since last spring Czernin Tells About Effort Made By Austria To End War in 1917 Vienna, Dec. 10. Count Czer nin, former Autro-Hungarian for eign minister, told the correspond ent that Austria in 1917 made des perate efforts to withdraw from the war, even to the extent of offering Germany the empire's richest coal and oil province, Galicia, if Ger many would surrender Alsace-Lorraine. Count Czernin added that Aus tria's efforts always were defeated by either General Von Ludendorff, the German chief quartermaster general, or other high German of ficials, who even went to the extent of asserting that they were willing to declare war on Austria if Austria made a separate peace.- ; ! Esthonia Declared Republic. London, Dec. 10. A Russian wire less dispatch received here today says that on December 8 the offi cial newspaper, Jzvestia, published a decree of the council of people's commissaries by which the coun cil's government recognizes the in dependence of the republic pro claimed by the Esthonian councils. NEGRO WHO RAN AMUCK LYNCHED AT GREEN RIVER Slayer, of Switchman Taken from Jail by Mob of 500 Persons and Hanged from Pole. Green River. Wyo., Dec. 10. A mob of 500 persons today lynched "Joe" Woodson, a negro, hanging him from a telephone pole in front of the court house here after he had shot Albert Miller, a switchman for the Union Pacific railway, kill ing him instantly, and wounded an other railroad man. The shooting followed the ejec tion of the negro from the dining room at the Union Pacific statioin. It was said that the negro, who was employed there as a porter, had made an offensive remark to a white waitress. Woodson later returned to the dining room armed with a revolver, and began firing. Miller fell at the first shot. An other bullet struck his companion, entering one arm. Woodson was arrested shortlv af terward and taken to jail. In the meantime the mob began forming. William ohenxollern has shed his uni form and appears regularly in civ ilian clothes about his retreat here, as do the members of his suite. The entourage has been reduced in number to 18, for him self and the former empress. The family life of the erstwhile royal pair appears to flow as even ly as that of any middle-aged couple who might be enjoying a quiet country holiday. Their rooms on the first floor of the cas'"s co:..mand a wide view of the landscape. They dine with their host, Count von Bentinck, being often joined at the meal by the count's brother, a noble re ading in a neighboring castle, and spend much of the time together strolling, through the castle grounds. The entrance to the castle is still strictly guarded. Ft. Dodge Man Named by Commissioner Roper Upon Revenue Bureau Washington, Dec. 10. D. M. Kel leher of Fort Dodge, la., a law partner of Senator Kenyon, and un til recently an attorney for the war trade board, has been recommended by Commissioner Roper for appoint ment as solicitor for the internal revenue bureau, to succeed A. A Ballentine, who will retire January 1. Mexican Petroleum Code is . Declared Unsatisfactory New York, Dec. 10. After an all day session at which Mexico's pro posed "petroleum code" was de clared "confiscatory" and wholly unsatisfactory, the American Asso ciation of Petroleum Producers in Mexico, comprising 33 members, yesterday cabled their representa tives in Mexico to break off negotia tions with the Mexican government and return to the United States. , No Nobel Peace Prixe.
