THE OMAHA SUNDAY BEE: DECEMBER 81918. 7 A GEM INDUSTRY NOW POSSIBLE IN THIS STATE Manufacture of Jewelry Now Facilitated by the Nearness of Great Fields ofv Stones. Omaha offers advantages as a cen ter for the manufacture of cheap jewelry, surpassing Providence, R. I., which since the elimination of the German source of supply has hecome the world's rr'"cjpal point . of production. Before the war Germany had a practical monopoly of the manufac ture of cheap jewelry, using gems produced in various parts of Eu rope and synthetic stones for mountings. Omaha is close to one of the stones that exists in the country today. All that is required for the development of this held is a mar ket for the native stones. Many Stones Here. In certain districts oL Nemaha, Richardson, Pawnee ind Johnson counties are large nelds of glacial drift where, in prehistoric ages, glacial streams deposited masses of debris collected over an immense area. In these fields are found splendid specimens of yellow topaz, tourma line and the peculiar red topaz called Brazilian ruby. There are al so cairngorms and bloodstone quartz. Lads skilled in the gathering of these gems follow the plow as their fathers plow the ground, turning up the gravelly spots on the hilltops, and they also explore the roadside washes and gulleys after hard hains in their search for the near-gems. Market is Handy. Amcng the most successful col lectors in Nemaha county are John T. Cox, cashier of the Bank of Howe, and Charles Regan, a pros perous farmer living between Au burn afld Humboldt. Sam Hughes, a former Omaha man who lives at Howe, is also a successful gem hunter. All of these men have beautiful specimens of the native stones, some uncut and others they have had cut by skilled lapidaries. Mount ed, they find a ready market among the neighborhood population at good prices. v The supply of these gems is so large that were a market created for the uncut stones an unfailing and liberal supply from a large territory would pour into any factory that could use the output, were it lo cated in Omaha. Rock Crystals Available. Nearby there is a large supply of beautiful white an yellow rock crystals. These are found in the gravel washings of the Platte at Louisville and when cut are more brilliant and erf- better gem quality than Rhinestones or other natural or synthetic productions. The greatest possibility for fac tory use in the fabrication of these gems is the beautiful yellow topaz found in the southwestern part of the state. Some of these are of great size, extreme hardness and of wonderful depth and brilliancy of color. Because of uniformity of color, as well as variety, they could be worked into handsome brooches or circlets. Massed Choirs to Lead Big "Victory Sing,? at Auditorium on Sunday Next Sunday December 15 a "Vic tpry Sing" will be held in the Mu nicipal Auditorium. Mass choirs from all tht churches in Omaha will lead the singing and Dan Des dunes band and the Fort Omaha Military band will play. Nothing like it was ever held in Omahai before and leaders have planned to make this a wonderful occasion. Red Cross girls in uniform will pass out song books to the audience. All the popular patriotic songs will be sung as well as those that the Boys have been staging in France. "Keep Your Head Down, Fritzie Boy," and the musical ditty, "Good Morning Mr. Zip-Zip-Zip," "K-K-Katy," and "Pack Up Your Troubles," are all in the song book nd will be sung with a zest that will almost raise the roof of tlfe Auditorium. There will be one speaker on the program who will give a short ad dress. The meeting is to stimulate en thusiasm for the Red Cross roll call but leaders promise that there will be no solicitation or collections at the big singing fete Sunday afternoon. Philadelphia Planning Peace Celebration and Soldier Dead Memorial Philadelphia, Dec. 7. Plans are under way for holding a big peace celebration in this city and for erect ing a memorial to the men of Phila delphia who gave their services in the war, against Germany. It is proposed to have the celebration ex- ceed in magnitude the Peace Jubilee of 1898, after the Spanish-American war ended. The memorial may take the form of a monument, an obelisk or an arch to be erected on the great new parkway -the city is now completing. Mayor Smith in his appeal for funds with which to build the me morial says: 'The memorial is to commemorate, for all time the brev ery of our soldiers, sailors and ma rines oyer sea, and the patriotic self sacrificing, soul-inspiring services of the women of Philadelphia." The suggestion has been . made that the city rename- some if ,its principal streets for noted military leaders of the allies! forces. Names of Pershing, Foch, Joffre, Haig, Al lenby and Diaz have been submitted. C HOP BY PHONE. CALL DOUGLAS 2100. WE'RE AT YOUR SERVICE. fcti Uie Cfiristtnas Store for 6verjodtf Gun V ORDER YOUR PER.
