YANKS SWEEP
ENEMY BACK IN
-MEUSE VALLEY
(Continued f rem Pic One.)
fought their way beyond Buzancy
to Fosse, a strong point nearly seven
miles beyond yesterday's starting
point and two and a half miles
north of Bayonville.
Last Organized Defense Broken.
Bayonville is an important strat
egic point, known as the" heart of
;he Freya Stellung. With its cap
ture the American troops had brok
en the Germans last organized de
fenses. The troops on the right,
who had been able to advance only
just past Gery-le-Grand yesterday
caught the mysterious signs of the
sudden 'giving way of the Germans
and pressed forward and into and
passed Clery le Petit. They over
came the lingering machine gun re
sistance in Barricourt wood and
captured Vilfers-Devant-'Duor"Here
the enemy launched a counter-attack
which failed; then the Ameri
cans moved forward again and oc
cupied Doulcon.
The total advance averaged more
than two and a half miles on a 14
mile front, but was considerably
greater at points. Numerous pris
oners, more than 60 cannon, scores
of 77s, dozens of 150s, numerous
howitzers of various calibers and
hundreds of machine guns were
captured-by the Americans during
the advance of today and Saturday.
Quantities of ammunition and war
material of all kinds fell into their
hands:
Huns Quit Argomie Forest
Paris, Nov. 2. The Germans are
retreating across the Argonne for
est and the French forces are close
upon them, having captured today,
according to the announcement of
the war office, numerous villages and
woods.
The statement says:
"Vigorous attacks yesterday and
this morning by the fourth army
on the Aisne front, in connection
with the victorious effort of the
Americans between the Argonne
and Meuse, have compelled the ene
my to beat a retreat across the Ar
gonne forest. Our troops, smash
ing the enemy rearguards, who by
stubborn resistance attempted to
check our advance, made important
progress along the whole front of
the attack.
"On the left we have taken Semuy
and carried our lines as far as the
south bank of the Ardennes canal,
which we have reached on a front of
two kilometers, from Semuy to Neu
ville et Day.
"Further south we have reached
the outskirts of Les Alleux, Quatre
Champs and La Croix-Aux-Bois,
after having captured Bois Vandy
and the village of Ballay, despite the
enemy resistance, which was partic
ularly violent on the Alleux plateau,
and the Crpix-Aux-Bois defile.
"On the right Longwe and Primat
fell into our hands. North of the
latter place our troops, pushing be
yond Chene Pate, continued, despite
the serious obstacle of the Argonne
forest, vigorously to pursue the
enemy, who withdrew, abandoning
considerable material.
"Germsn counter attacks, especial
ly in the region of Semuy, were re
pulsed and enabled us to add sev
eral hundred to the number of our
prisoners."
Push Beyond Valenciennes.
London, Nov. 2. Further impor
tant gains were made by the British
troops east of. Valencienes, Field
Marshal Haig reports from head
quarters tonight. The village of
Marly was captured and British de
tachments entered St. Saulve.
Berlin Admits Defeat
Berlin, via London, x Nov. 2.
American divisions attacking in
dense columns between the Aisne
and the Meuse, have penetrated the
German positions between Chani
pigneulle and Aincreville, according
to the official statement from gen
eral headquarters -today. The Amer
icans have gained some territory be
yond Bayonville.
A powerful artillery preparation
preceded attacks carried out by the
French and Americans for the pur
pose of securing an opening on the
Aisne.
During the night of Friday Val
enciennes was evacuated without
molestation.
Albers Indicted as Traitor.
Portland, Ore., Nov. 2. J. Henry

bers Milling Co., with branches in
all large Pacific coast cities, was in
dicted here today by the federal
grand jury on seven counts for al
leged violation of the espionage act

PRESIDENT OF '
CHINA WISHES
UNITY IN LAND
Peking, Nov. 2. (By Associated
Press.) Hsu Chih-Chang, the new
president of China, has issued a
mandate urging peace and union be
tween north and south China. He
declared that the policy of his gov
ernment will be to promote educa
tion and develop industries.
President Wilson, the mandate
says, is greatly admired by the peo
ple of China for his utterances on
universal peace. It declares that
China entered the war with a desire
"to preserve humanity and uphold
international law."
Civil war in China, the president
asserts, must cease, the vitality of
the country must be preserved and
the administration must be recog
nized, otherwise the future of the
republic "will be utterly hopeless."
Turkey in State of Anarchy,
Is Report at Amsterdam
Amsterdam, Nov. 2. A state of
anarchy prevails throughout ' Tur
wey, according to information re
ceived by the Armenian correspond
ence bureau here. Hundreds of
thousands of deserters are subsist
ing by means of robbery of the mass
of the population. Constantinople
is declared to be literally famished
and impatiently awaiting the arrival
of allied forces.
