Prices Decline Rapidly Under Liquidation; Market Closes Nervous. Chicago, Oct. 3. Corn rapidly declined In value today under liquidation due for the most part to the new Gernfan and Austrian notes received at Washington. Prices closed nervous, 314 c to 514 c net lower, with November $1.17 to $1.17 and December $1.14 to $1.15. Oats fin ished 1 c to lc down, and provisions off 25o to $1.37. Unloading by scattered holders de pressed the corn market throughout ths day, and about the only demand of im portance came from shorts. Reports, touching the diplomatic and military out look, monopolized attention and were In terpreted by the great majority ot trad ers as of decided bearish Insignificance. The fact that month-end adjustment of trades was In progress tended In a gen eral manner to deprive tlje market of support, and so, too, did a forecast of good weather for the rest of the week. Besides, late In the session, advices were current that tjie United States was far be hind Its schedule on wheat exports, and that there was practically no vessel-room obtainable for corn. Oats gave way with corn. Exporters were still out of the market, and domes tic demand was slow. Weakness In the hog market as well as In grain caused provisions to tumble. Pork especially made a sharp descent. Cash quotations: Corn No. 2 yellow. FINANCIAL New York. Oct. 30. Influenced mainly by further indications of a contraction of credits jind the reduction in the United States Bteel . extra dividend from 3 to 2 per cent, the stock market today exper ienced a drastic liquidating movement with severe Impairment of quoted values. Declines in the general list, after some early firmness In rails, shippings and cop pers, ranged from 3 to 15 points, oils leading the collapse just as they had fea tured the advance of . recent weeks. ' The bulk of the selling, much of which was clearly of an enforced character, with a liberal sprinkling of bearish pressure, again centered around United States Steel, that stock furnishing about 25 per cent of the total turnover at a gross re action of 6 points to 102, closing prac tically at the bottom. Mexican Petroleum, which Is In dis favor with the authorities of the exchange because of its spectacular performances, opened at a decline of 914 points, rallied 6 and in the broader selling of the last hour reacted 14 points, showing a loss of 31 points In tw days. Even the high-grade rails and shippings, metals and representative specialties broke sharply with speculative issues in the final hour, when support seemed al most wholly lacking, weakness prevailing at the end. Greater firmness of rates on Paris was the only reflection of the more favorable developments In the foreign situation, neutral remittances remaining unaltered. Bonda were Inclined to ease, but held better than stocks, showing no marked weakness. Liberty 314 made a slight gain, I Bait. & Ohio... B. & S. Copper.. Cal. Petroleum..
