by a majority of trader that the latest

corn. The mark this morning as com
pared with a week ago showed gain of
6e to 6Uc a bushel. Oats, too, were up
tVie to 474c, and provisions 10c to $1.85,
Althongh at first corn price broke un
der selling pressure due to bearish ver
sions of the German reply, the market be
gan to ascend as soon aa the truth re
garding the text commenced to be appar
ent. Then a rush of buying set In which
swept values npward, and discounted the
general bellefthat the document would be
officially declared Inadequate. After
ward something of a reaction took place
coincident with reports that the allies had
agreed to armistice terms and a a result
of gossip that importation of corn from
Argentina were contemplated. Asser
tions, however, that the United States
government would allow much higher
prices In contracts for packing house prod
ucts tended yesterday to stimulate a
fresh advance In corn.
Separate strength of oats was based on
bullish estimates of export needs. .
Provisions made a notable upward
swing on forecasts of a lift for the mini
mum vajue of bogs.

for the week 25,600 head. Today's trade
was the very opposite of previous days
this weik, being unusually active and
sharply higher, with a clearance made at
an early hour. Bulk of today's sxles was

$16.00 and tops went to $17.25. Quite a
few hogs sold at steady prices, but the
general market Is fully 2550c higher
than yesiorrtay. Trade has been a very
univen affair this week, with a decidedly

was a sharp discrimination practically
all week against heavy packers. Friday

Corn Declines Regardless of Fixing of
Minimum Price on Hogs,
Chicago, Oct. 2$. Corn closed at nearly
the lowest figures of the day regardless
of announcement that minimum hog
prtcea for November would be advanced,
and of the likelihood therefor that de
mand for corn to feed hog would be
much enlarged. Th posting of th new
hog price cam after th corn market
had succumbed to th bearish Influence
of th new regarding Turkey. Moreover,
sign appeared to Indicate that Austria
might soon follow Turkey and there were
bearish advice at hand relative to the
disposal of Alsace-Lorraine. Under uch
circumstance and notwithstanding wet
weather, all attempts to rally the mar
ket met with but little success.

Provision went soaring on account of a
big lift given to mlnfmum hog price for
November. Th greatest resulting ad

Bootlegger Has Battle Royal
With Illinois Law Officers
McComb, III., Oct. 26.-Four
men and a wopian were wounded
today as the result of a two-hour
fight between officers and S. T.
Danley. a rhubarb wine maker who
escaped from a jail a year ago and
for some time past, it is alleged,
was selling his product in defiance
of local authorities.
Chief, of Police William Purdum
and two deputies were victims of
Danley's shotgun in the fight which
ensued when they, aided by scores
of citizens armed with rtvolvers,
besieged his home where he took
refuge. Danley himself was wound
ed slightly as was his wife, before
he was taken into custqdy by the
police, who were aided by Danley's
son, Ralph.
