Probe of Brisbane Paper
Deal to Begin Tuesday
Washington, Oct. 13. Investiga
tion of charges that the liquor in
terests furnished the money with
which Arthur Brisbane purchased
the Washington Times will begin
before the senate sub-judiciary com
mittee Tuesday with A. Mitchell
Palmer, alien property custodian,
and Alexander' Konta of New York
as witnesses. The inquiry resulted
from charges made by Mr. Palmer
in a speech recently in Harrisburg,
Ta. Mr. Konta will appear at his
own request for the purpose of ex
plaining a letter sent by him to Ber
nard Dernburg, German propagand
ist, reviewing the newspaper situa
tion in New York and the possi
bilities of a newspaper being ac
quired there by German interests.
Troops Called to Quell
Riot of Japanese Miners
Tokio, Oct. 13. The social unrest
in Japan which started with the rice
riots spread to the mining districts
of southern Japan. The miners re
cently requested an increase of
wages to meet advancing prices. In
Yamaguchi prefecture miners set
fire to the house of the mine owner.
Troops were called out. Twelve
rioters were killed and 176 wounded.'
