Oct. 1 The cleavage be tween war and peace, shares became more divergent In today's active and confused stock market, the former again yielding Irregularly to heavy selling, while some of the latter added to gains of the pre vious day. Rather more noteworthy than either of these movtMiienta, however, was the con fident Inquiry for rails, Including second ary, or low-priced shares. Absorption of those Issues was again ascribed to ex cellent statements of earnings. Gossip credited no small p;;rt of the demand for rails to neutral foreign Inter ests, which are known to have made care ful Investigation recently Into some of the. minor lines traversing southern and southwestern sections of the country. Among the erstwhtie "war brides'' fur ther reactions of 1 to 4 points were wit nessed and United Suites Steel, never popularly regarded as a war stock, made an extreme decline of 3 points on a very large turnover. Shippings, motors, coppers and various miscellaneous shares contributed ap preciably to the general strength of the list until the final hour, when United States Steel was at its minimum and rails forfeited much. If not all, of their early advance, the market closing with a heavy tone. About the only direct reflection of latest war developments was furnished by the further weaknesses on neutral exchange rates, Holland and Swltzreland again sagging. Belief In Quick Ending of War Brings About Setback In Prlcea of Corn. 'Chicago, Oct. 1. Increased belief In chances of a quick ending of the war brought about decided setbacks today In the price of corn. The market closed unsettled 2 4c t0 3c. net lower, with October, $1.33 to $1,334 and Novembor. $1.30i to $1.31. Oats finished off to c up and provisions ranging from $1 decline to 20c advance. Developments that had a bearing on peace monopolized the attention of corn traders and resulted In general selling until values were forced down more than 10c under the high point of the previous day. Much of the pressure to get rid of holdings was said to come from rural sources. On the extreme break, Important covering by shorts took place and during the remainder of the session the market was characterized by rapid bulges and breaks. In the end, the trade was said to be more closely evened up than has been the case in a long time. Seaboard demand checked declines In the oats market. Exporters were under stood to have made liberal purchases here and at other leading centers. As on previous days of late the chief lr ylng waa on the part of shorts, who wt-re in a position to collect profits. Ac cordingly, upturns were not maintained. The close was unsettled, 24c to 3c net lower, with October, $1.33 to $1 334, nd November. $1.30 to $1.31. Lard and ribs afterward developed con siderable strength. Pork, on the con trary, dropped to the maximum limit al lowable for a single day. Playing only the first class theaters in America and with the reputation of being the most expen sive and elaborate production ever cinematized, William Fox is pre senting at the Boyd theater this week the vampire "deluxe" Theda Bara in that biblical character, "Salome." Beginning today the shows will be continuous from 1 to 11 p. m. All seats reserved. Tefft Johnson, who is to be the new director of Madge Evans, the little girl star, has made a specialty of directing children. "Children cannot remember what they did in a scene play only an hour or two previous," says Mr. Johnson, "and for .hat reason the director has to carry the whole scenario in his own mind. However you have this advantage that th:y will do exactly as they are told in a natural man ner and this is a great aid in pro ducing certain effects. D. W. Griffith'c latest and great est triumph, "Hearts of the Worid," is to be presented for its premiere in this city at the Brandeis 'theater next week. Already a large number of theater parties have been organ ized ami will be a fashionable af fair all the way through. Louise Huff, the dainty little per son, who appears in so many 16-year-old roles, is the mother of a dainty little replica of herself, Mary Louise Huff, 3 years old. Lila Lee is having troubles with her new riches as proprietor of a moving picture star's salary. She bought a car and the first day ran over a Ford, right Aitside of the studio, where the day before she had been initiated into the mysteries of rattlesnakes and their noises. "I just ran over a Ford," she said. "It had seven rattles," and was awarded the prize for the new est flivver joke. She settled damages and the next day half of her own car was taken off by a passing truck, when she turned the wrong way. As before remarked, "you mustn't weaken." Omaha Airman Missing; May Be in German Hands Lieutenant Howard Bittinger of the Seventeenth United States air squadron, has been missing since August 25, and fears are entertained that he has been killed, or captured by the Germans. Lieutenant Bittinger is an .Omaha boy, son of Mrs. Frances Bittinger, now in New York. He enlisted last spring in Philadelphia, where he was in the employ of an uncle, an extensive furniture manufacturer. He was sent to the flying field near Fort Worth, Tex., where he was given his air training, going to France last July. In a letter re ceived from him late in July he wrote that he was attached to the Seventeenth air squadron of the United States army and that daily he was making two flights over German territory and that he had been in a number of air battles. Waning Man Power Fails to Stop Dan Cupid's Darts That Dan Cupid still enjoys a for midable following despite the waning man-power due to the incursions of the war god, Mars, is evidenced by the fact that 216 marriage licenses were granted during the month of September as compared with 277 permits issued for the same period last year. However, about 50 per cent of the licenses granted last month were issued to soldiers in uniform or prospective warriors whose sweet hearts sought the novel distinction of being war bride. Most of those who sought to wor ship at the altar of Eros were be tween the ages of 20 and 31. AMUSEMENTS. AMUSEMENTS. Vaudeville and Photo Play. ' CHEO SAN Miniature Comic Opera.
