NEW YORK STOCKS
Trading Assumes Wider Scope;
Trend Irregular; Rails Firm
at Gains; Call Money
Eases Slightly.
New Tork. Sept. 4 Trading In stocks
today assumed wider 'scope, but the mar
ket developed an Irregular trend Immedi
ately after the firm" opening, the usual
leaders closing mostly at moderate reces
sions. War news, although less Impressive, was
sufficiently favorable to invite further
oubllc participation, but commission houses
fwere less active than yesterday. Ralls held
the grj.ter part of their gains on an
nouncement that the government contract
will soon become operative.
The weekly weather report, coming on
yesterday's adverse showing for cotton, in
dicated mixed crop conditions, central and
eastern states being benefited, while the
section west of the Rockies remained too
dry.
For the first time In a fortnight call
money eased a trifle, the rate falling to 614
per cent In the afternoon when most of
the day's requirements had been met.
United States Steel, Mexican Petroleum,
Reading and Southern Railway were princi
pal contributors to the day's business. Steel
moved in a 1-polnt radius, approximating
the, high record of the preceding aesslon,
but closed at a loss of of a point.
Early gains of fractions to 2 point In
other Industrials, equipments, coppers, as
well as shippings and oils, were largely It
not wholly relinquished at the Irregular end.
Continued strength of allied exchange,
with greater heaviness of rates on neutral
countries, especially the Scandinavian cen
ters, again measured the successes of the
entente arms.
. Aside from their steady tone, domestic
and foreign bonds were without feature.
Total sales, par value, aggregated (7,676,000.
Old United States bonds were unchanged
on call.

CHICAGO GRAIN AND PROVISIONS.
Corn Prices Advance on Expectation of
Damage to Crop from Vrmt.
Chicago, Sept. 4. Misgiving in regard
to possible serious damage by frost made
the corn market today average higher. Prices
closed unsettled, September, (1.6601.65 ;
October, (1.594 01.66 and the final range
as a whole o off to c up compared with
24 hours before. Oats advanced to
c net. The outcome In provisions varied
from lOo decline to a gain of 2c.
Heavy frost this morning In Minnesota
together with predictions of frost tonight In
Wisconsin kept corn traders uneasy through
out he session. Trade, however, lacked
volume, and It was not until after the gov
ernment weekly crop report was Issued that
upturns seemed to have any lasting charac
ter. The greater strength which then de
veloped was largely due to the fact that ac
cording to the report the bulk of the crop
would not be safe from frost damage before
September 15 or 20. Attempt to realize
profits though brought about a rather sharp
reaction In the last thirty minutes of the
day.
Government Inquiry put firmness Into oata.
Besides, receipts were not large, and Cana
dian crop estimates were bullish.
Provisions hardened a little owing to the
monthly stock report, which ahowed a de
crease of about 19,000,000 pounds of meat
and 2,000 pounds of lard.
