Very little business wss done by mid-forenoon and prospects were that trading would be on a basis of 1525c lower than last week. Desirable cornfed beeves were very scarce and about steady, ranging anywhere from $15.0018.00. Bulk of the butcher stock was selling from $7.60 9.00 and quotably 25c lower than yester day. Stockers were very much demoralized, prices ranging anywhere from $6.60ffl)9.60. Shippers did not have so many orders this morning, and were a little more discriminating in their choice of loads, while a few sales early were reported steady, they lowered their bids, reductions of 15ifT25o being re ported in some cases. Packers were bearish this morning and purchased their loads fully 10 15c lower. The market was a very uneven affair mostly 1016o lower, with a few late sales considered 20 iff 25c lower, closing weak. Bulk is $18.10018.40; top, $19.30. Sheep 3 loads of sheep wera reported In todav. estimated at 10.000 head The market was a little slow In getting under way. While no early sales were made, sen timent seemed to be that fat lambs would at least be steady and perhaps stronger. Prospects were not so bright for feeders. Aged stuff was about steady. Belief that the bullish effects of the hot wave have been suffi ciently discounted for the time being had a restraining Influence In the corn market today. New advances In prlca took place, but were not held. The close was unsettled, lKc lowsr to He gain, with September 81.61 to 81.63 and October $1.63. Oats finished o off to Uc up, and pro visions varying from 15c decline to a rise of 2o. Not only did the buying of corn lack urgency, but It was plain that many large commission houses had switched to the selling side of the market. The principal demand cams from shorts, and baa the upturns In valuea did not have aubstanlal backing. Continued torrid weathor and the absence of rain moreover were somewhat offset by the possibility that storms from the northwest or from the gulf would penetrate the corn belt, and would afford at least parlal relief from the danger from crop damage. Besides, the trade showed considerable disposition to await the gov ernment weather and crop reports duo tomorrow, and not to risk exaggerating the prospective curtalmen of yield. Oats were swayed almost entirely by the action of corn. Trade In provisions waa only of a scat tering character. Chicago, Aug. 8. Butter Unchanged. Aug. 6. The stock market to day reflected the more uncertain mood of professional operators, yesterday's late ad vance being partly cancelled. Trailers apparently deemed tt advisable to adopt a more conservative course In view of the notice Issued by the local federal reserve bank urging financial Institutions to conserve credits. On the surface this was without mate rial effect, money rates holding at recent quotations It was generally believed, however, that time funds soon may be en tirely withdrawn from the market, for other than productive purposes. Business was broader and mors active than on the previous day, but noteworthy movements were again restricted to spe cialties. I'nltcd Stntes Steel made Its best price at tho opening, repeating Its recent maxi mum of no. but reacting at 1 points, with only a nominal rally Independent steel and the active equip ments lost 1 to 1 points, shippings about as much and oils about 1 point.
