Prices of Corn and Oats Soar on Milling
Demand Dal Setback Ensues,
Chicago, July 13. Keen demand from
millers, together with prospects of curtailed
receipts made corn soar today, but a ma
terial setback eneued after announcement
that President Wilson had begun drafting
a veto of the bill to Increase the govern
ment guaranteed price of wheat. The elose
was nervous, la to $o net higher, with
August $1.61 to $1.(1 and September
$1 61 to $1.61. Osts gained o to le,
and provisions 6o to 10o.
Eagerness to buy corn seemed to be based
largely on fear that the bill to establish
$2 40 as the minimum price of wheat would
automatically become a law. As In such
cases, according to some authorities, the
cost of wheat 'flour would be virtually pro
hibitive for ordinary consumers, the view
seemed logical that the use of substitutes.
especially corn, must broaden out big.
Scarcity of good grades of corn and the
fanry prices being paid for them tended
also to create bullish sentiment. Until
definite knowledge was obtalnsd of the
forthcoming veto and of a likelihood that
attempts to override the veto would fall.
Oats rose With corn, but was bearlshly af
fected Inter both by veto news and by rains
over western Canada.
Strength In provisions resulted from the
advnnce of hogs nnd grain.

Dun's Trade Review.
New York, July 12. Dun's tomorrow will
say:
With pressure of war demands Increasing
rather than lessening, there Is little of the
customary seasonal halting In leading in
dustries, and weather conditions, whlls ne
cessitating downward revisions of crop esti
mates, have aided intensive productive ef
forts In the great eastern manufacturing
centers.. That summer shutdowns through
lack of orders will be virtually absent this
year, the varied and extensive government
requirements plainly Indicate, and holiday
observances have been suspended at some
establishments so as not to check the flow
of materials Into channels where they are
urgently wanted. Yet the straining for ca
pacity outputs has forced stoppages for re
pairs In not a few Instances and high tem
peratures must obviously be reckoned with
as a factor In Imposing restraint on future
operations.
