Busy in France Tutoring
Injured Soldiers.
Washington, June 29. Teachers,
nurses and healers, too, are the "Blue
Gowns" of the army medical corps,
at work now in the hospitals of the
United States and "over there."
Reconstruction aides is their offi
cial name, but ttfe cheery hue of their
distinctive uniform has already won a
handier name for the special corps of
70 women whose membership treats
and teaches among the maimed sol
diers brought bark from the battle
front. Theirs is the work of coaxing
back the wasted "muscles and disused
limbs of wounded men, and later by
patrent tutoring instilling deftness in
new arts and vocations which the hos
pital schools are planning for the re
turned soldiers.
Most of the "Blue Gowns" were re
cruited from the instruction staff Sa of
manual training schools and civilian
hospitals, where experienced workers
were found available.
"Beside a table a young fellow in
uniform was carving a conventional
flower border on a wooden picture
frame," says an official description of
their work. "The design was his own
and the work his first piece. He was
inclined to be clumsy because he was
using his left hand! A 'Blue Gown'
was ready to guide and advise him.
The use of this man's right hand has
been permanently lost; it.was thought
by him at one time that he was handi
capped for life as a money earner, be
cause his successful profession had
been that of a mechanical draftsman.
So it is that he is wood-carving, not
as a possible vocation, but to train his
left hand. Not only are his jingers
becoming nimble by slow degrees but
his mind is at the same time occupied.
As he becomes adept in. left-handed
carving, he is preparing or the time
when he will again begin to draft,
this time with his left hand. This
mental concentration upon a new task
is believed by doctors and psycholo
gists to be a valuable antidote for dis
couragement. "At the same open-air worship,
which is the veranda of a hospital, one
man was intent upon knitting a scarf.
He had chosen worsted of a coral
pink, and- the knitting was being done
upon a wooden framework. One
group of men, temporarily crippled,
were carving designs upon wooden
blocks, and several were learning to
weave upon hand looms."
Typewriting and basketry, and also
the childhood lore of the spelling
book and the arithmetic are some of
the convalescent activities which the
"Blue Gowns" direct. In the treat
ment rooms inside, they were guiding
electrical appliances and administer
ing the complicated series of treat
ments that perfect the restoration
work started by the surgeon at the
front. There is a large field for their
work among soldiers who have been
imprisoned for weeks in casM"and
bandages after a wound has fereen sus
tained, and the army provides
through the "Blue Gowns" the trained
operators.
Since the corps was organized tinder

ary, pay and status for its members
have been established. They receive
$50 a month while on duty in the
United States, and $60 a month if they
go abroad. They are housed at the
hospitals, or allowance of $62.50 a
month additional is made for quarters
outside. Age limits have been fixed
from 25 to 40 years. '

Ole Jonsrud on Death Bed Re
calls What He Did to Wil
helm II in Norway Many
Years Ago.

Viroqua, Wis., June 29. During t
conscious moment Ole Jonsrud
turned over in his death bed
and chuckled. He was telling au
thorities at the county home hers
the story of how he seized th
German kaiser, Wilhelm Hollen
zollern by the nape of the neck and
seat of the trousers and chucked him
into a snow drift in Norway.
"If I had only realized my oppor
tunity," Jonsrud muttered, "my
nephews and America's sons would
not be sacrificing their lives on the
altar of Wilhelm's greed and fright
fulness." After relating the incident, which
wsa confirmed by his sister. Mrs.
Martha Gottlieb of Chicago, and
other relatives, Jonsrud, who had
been a resident of Westby for many
years, died at the county home,
where he had been ill for some time.
The incident involving the rough
handling of Wilhelm, then crown
prince of Germany, came to light in
a letter from Jonsrud's niece, who
pointed to the affair with pride. The
superintendent tf the hospital ques
tioned Jonsrud.
The crown prince was 19 years old
when he and a companion engaged
Jonsrud, a coach driver, to convey
them1 from Sondre-land, Norway, to
Odncs, a distance of several miles.
Severe weather conditions obtained
and the horses picked their way
through the snow drifts with dif
ficulty. Suddenly the crown prince burst
forth with a volley of oaths of pro
test at the slow pace and commanded
Jonsrud to lash the horses. The
latter refused and the crown prince
seized the whip and began beating
the animals. They darted into a
gallop and got out of control of
the driver.
When they were brought to a
stop, Jonsrud seized Wilhelm and
hurled him foremost into a drift and
then held him there while the
crown prince sputtered and cursed. ,
"Do you know who I am?" Wil
helm roared.
"No, and I don't care," Jonsrud re
torted. The driver was amazed at the end
of the journey to receive a check for
50 crowns signed by the crown
prince.
"It was the big event of my life."

Northcliffe Sends American
Boys July Fourth Message
Detroit, Mich.,.June 29. A Fourth
of July message to American boys
from Lord Northcliffe, British pub
lisher and journalist, urging them to
"Get prepared; keep prepared," in the
event that the war continues so long
that they will be' calld upon to fight,
was made public here today.
"The lesson of this great war is
preparedness," said Lord Northcliffe
in his message, which will appear in
the July issue, of The American Boy.
published here. "Now it may be
God grant that it may bel that you'
American boys of 1918 shall not be
called to go forth to a foreign land '
and fight beside your fathers and
brothers and the men of military age
in Britain and France for world free
dom and justice to the weak, as well
as the strong. We hope this war will
end in victory long before you can be
called to the flag. But my message
to you is to remember that no man
knows what tomorrow will, brint;
forth.
"A great many of you millions of
American boys are close to manhood
now, and to many such boys may fall
even yet the task of 'going over to
help your men and ours to win the
war on the field of battle. A great
many, the majority, of the American
soldiers already in the field sturdy,
brave chaps were boys like your
selves only a short time ago. And
just as they march to the front with
a glad, heart and a-song on their lips,
and a great and solemn vow to 'carry
on' for victory, whatever the cost, so
will you go if the opportunity comes.
"But my message pf 'preparedness
to you does not nfean only that you
will be prepared to go and fight when
the call comes. Preparedness means
that you can help nov. Do your bit,
whether it is gathering kindling so
that your father will have more
money to buy Liberty bonds, or
looking after the baby so that your
mother may go out and sew for the
Red Cross. Do your bit, if it means
giving up sweets and movies and use
less spending of money, to help
Uncle Sam by buying thrift stamps,
by running errands for the Red Cross,
or by splitting wood for the widow
whose son is fighting 'over there.'

Musical talent among the new ar
