The long arm of Uncle Sam lias taclied out to include even 10 cents worth of powder within its grasp nd the government lias decreed, .that enemy aliens must not buy any piece of fireworks or explosive - costing more than a dime. Even American citizens must obtain a license if they wish to buy a fire cracker or a Ro man candle worth more than 10 cents. All dealers in explosives of, whatever size or value must obtain licenses "The. United States government wants to Keep track of every bit of powder that is sold," says Frame Dewey, county clerk, who is issuing the licenses. "Jhe purpose, is un doubtedly to prevent powder in any quantity from finding ifrs way into the" hands of alien enemies." - Two " Aliens Apply. ; Only two alien enemies have ap plied to Dewey for licenses to handle explosives,, and these were small shop keepers who were ignorant of the law, ; Dewey fs acting under the regula tion of last November, issued by the Department tf the Interior, bureau of mines, of which F. S.'Peabody is di rector in charge of explosives. Dewey was appointed director in charge of Douglas county. , All dealers are required to obtain licenses from Dewey beforehandling explosives of any nature. The deal ers are forbidden to sell -more than 10 cents' worth of any one kind of explosive to a purchaser, unless the purchaser has a license to buy a greater quantity. . What You Can Buy. 'This regulation includes explo- sives and fireworks of all kinds with the single exception of cartridges for small arms : and shotguns," ssaid Dewey. "It includes smokeless pow der, and all chemicals or ingredients which could be combined into explo sives, such as nitric acid. Even pho tographers must have licenses if they wish to buy flashlight powder." The county1 clerk s office has been rushed by dealers who have applied for licenses within the., last two or three days, Dewey expects to issue over 500 licenses before July 4. Sixth of McShane Boys Applies for Active Service Leo McShane one of the six famous McShane boys enrolled in the United States service, has applied .for admission to the Omaha ambuH lance company, stationed at Chilli cothe, O. He has been engaged in government work with the agricul tural department of the Nebraska university. One brother, George, is sergeant in the ambulance company. Three Arrested For Possession of Booze; All Deny Ownership G. M. Pailing, giving bis address as Malmo. Neb., was arrested Monday charged with illegal possession and transportation of intoxicating liquor. He was arrested at Thirteenth and William streets in an automobile by members of the morals squad. Two pint bottles of whisky were found in the car which is being held by police. Ed Mason, 1420 North Twentieth street, and John Kiley, 1536, South Twenty-fourth street, inmates of the car were also arrested and charged with illegal possession of liquor. The arrested men refused to tell police who was the possessdr of the liquor. Manawa Eighteen Inches , ' Higher Than a Week Ago . The roadway to the lake, designated by council ciuns as tne Manawa boule vard, has been cindered, oiled and rolled until it is in perfect condition for automobiles.' . ' ' Douglas County Farmers ' Get Cheap Hail Insurance The first four farmers in Dousrlas county to take advantage of the nail insurance act, passed by the last legis lature, are getting high-priced pro tection at a cneap rate, says county Clerk Frank Dewey. Under the terms of the hail insurance act a farmer can insure 40 acres of corn against hail during the growing season for $10, and other amounts of land for proportionate, rates.
