A remarkable, logical and hopeful exposition of Christianity's part in the great war was preached yesterday morning at Hanscom Park Methodist church by Bishop James W. Bash ford, senior Methodist bishop of China. "It seems to me quite clear from events that Jesus Christ is already anticipating victory for the allies," declared Bishop Brashford. He has brought us up to the borders of the promised land. We are entering a new era of the human race. The na tions of the world are ready for this new era, all except the central powers. They are 500 years behind the times. "Look for a few moments at the re markable way in which God has led us. When we were selecting a presgi dent back in 1912, God directed in a remarkable way the election of Mr. Wilson. 1 am not an original Wilson man, but I firmly believe now that he was raised up for this crisis just as Washington and Lincoln were raised up for the crises of their times. I know of not another man who could have kept us out of the war as long as Wilson did with honor or who could have led us into the war with such united strength of the whole na tion when the time came. Sign of New Era. "Another sign of the new era is the passing by congress of the prohibitory amendment, a thing that none of us dreamed of for the near future two or three years ago. This will be recog nized 50 years hence as the greatest piece of humane legislation next to the emancipation proclamation. And its effect will be so broad that eventually it will save us enough money to pay for the war and will save us many fold more human lives than will be lost by the war. "Another sign is the enfranchise ment of woman. England has done it. New York, our greatest state, and many other states have already done it. Woman is to take her rightful place in the world and when she. does so, several things will follow.. The morality of the race will be raised and there will be no longer the double standard of morality, i-ahor condi ditions will be made better and child conservation will become a real fact. "Look at the way the people, rich and poor alike, have submitted to en ormous taxation with scarcely a mur-r mur. Ten years ago they would, have fought such tax legislation as we have today with all the power at-their' com mand. -" ..' . . Sweeping Over Free People. "The wave of philanthropy that is sweeping over the free people is an other sign of the new era of humanity. Never in all history have the people poured out their money In such an astounding stream of unselfishness as they are today for the Red Cross and many other philanthropies. ' ' ' "I tell you Jesus Christ reigns and he is working out a plan through all the turmoil of the battle. And in that plan the emperor who is trying to conquer the world has no T)art save that of defeat. The philosophy of our enemies is wrong and their cause will be defeated because they believe only in might while the philosophy that rules the world is that of service. That which dosen't serve humanity dies. The wild beasts have nearly disap peared from the globe because they didn't serve. On the other hand the useful beasts have greatly increased. The same thing is true of nations. -Keynote of development. . " : "The keynote of development in the last century was nationality. It is the idea that Germany op poses. It wants to be the lominant power. It is back in the middle ages with all the world opposed to it. And even though its armies reach Paris and the English channel, it can t win the war. "Let us not forget either that we cannot win for democracy merely by defeating Germany. The defeat of the kaiser merely removes the obstacle from the path. Then will come the work of iducating the world up to democracy. And the missonary move ment, so far as I know, is the only medium by which this is done at pres ent. Missionaries are observing that wonderful internationalizing com mand of the Master, 2,000 years ago, to ' go into all nations, healing, teach ing and preaching.' I believe that if we had spent $1,000,000 in sending missionaries into Russia 50 years ago, Russia would not have crumbled at the crucial moment and the war would have been over today. Our work in China, the paying of the Boxer indem nity, has brought China close to us and today we could have 10,000,000 Chinamen to fight for us if we could equip and feed them.'
